Wike’s loyalist rejects Fubara’s redeployment, resigns as Rivers commissioner

The Rivers State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zaccaeus Adangor, SAN has rejected his redeployment to the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor’s Office), and consequently resigned from the State Executive Council.

Adangor’s resignation came barely 24 hours after the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, redeployed him in a minor cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.

Fubara, in a letter issued on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, redeployed Adangor alongside the State Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, who himself was moved to the Ministry of Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment

Adangor and Kamalu, as well as seven other commissioners who had previously resigned from Fubara’s cabinet in the heat of the political crisis that rocked the state, are loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Adangor’s resignation was contained in a letter he personally signed, dated April 24 and addressed to the SSG on Wednesday and obtained by our correspondent.

The letter was titled, “Cabinet Reshufflement: Notice of Rejection of Deployment and Resignation from the Rivers State Executive Council.”

Adangor accused Fubara of willfully interfering with the performance of his duties as Commissioner.

He further said the governor had in the last few weeks directed him not to defend, oppose, or appear in suits instituted against his office and the Government of Rivers State by persons admittedly hired and sponsored by the Government of Rivers State.

The six-point letter reads, “My attention has been drawn to your letter dated April 23, 2024, and widely circulated on social media whereby I was “deployed to the ministry of special duties (governor’s office).

I hereby give you notice of my rejection of the said deployment and resignation from the Rivers State Executive Council with effect from the 24th day of April 2024.

“I wish to state for the record that I am no longer willing to continue to serve in the administration of His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, in any capacity whatsoever.

“It is important to mention that the Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State, by directing me not to defend, oppose, or appear in suits instituted against the Honourable Attorney-General and the Government of Rivers State by persons admittedly hired and sponsored by the Government of Rivers State.

“Having served the Government and good people of Rivers State dutifully as a member of the Rivers State Executive Council for the past five years, it has become imperative for me to quit the administration in order to preserve my reputation.

“I wish the administration of His Excellency well.”

Dangote Refinery Gives Update On Diesel Price Reduction

Dangote Petroleum Refinery said its N940 per litre diesel price cut is only applicable to customers buying five million litres and above.

The Head of Communication, Mr Anthony Chiejina made the clarification in a statement on Tuesday, noting that N970 per litre is for customers buying one million and above.

Dangote Refinery made its third diesel price cut to N940 and N970 per litre, respectively.

The company had earlier announced two price cuts which saw the price of diesel drop to N1,000 per litre from N1,600.

Recall that the entrance of Dangote Refinery into the sale of Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, had impacted the West Africa oil & gas industry.

On May 22 last year, the 650,000 barrels per day crude oil refinery was commissioned.

However, the facility is yet to commence the sale of fuel.

Standard and Poor’s Global Commodities said Dangote Refinery will commence the sale of fuel in the fourth quarter of 2024.

IG Egbetokun Denies saying Nigeria Not Mature For State Police

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Ben Okolo, has said his comments at the National Dialogue on State Police in Abuja on Monday were his personal views.

Okolo, who had expressively said that he was representing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun at the event, said the country is not mature enough for state police despite Nigeria’s myriad of security challenges.

He had also suggested that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to become departments under the Force.

Following this development, his comments angered many Nigerians, who said the rising insecurity in the country demands urgent attention.

Speaking at a briefing at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, Okolo retracted his comments and clarified some points.

The police officer said his statement that “Nigeria is not ready for a decentralised police force” was a personal view and did not reflect the stance of the police force.

According to Okolo, the comments were not that of the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force, adding that the position of the Force will soon be made known.

Hadi Sirika: EFCC To Invite Sacked Heads Of FAAN, NAMA, Others

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to invite all the sacked Heads of agencies of the Ministry of Aviation over the failed Nigeria Air project.

The sacked officials are being invited in connection with an ongoing investigation of a former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, relating to money laundering amounting to N8.069 billion.

According to Daily Trust, the anti-graft agency is planning to formally invite all the sacked heads of agencies who worked directly under Senator Sirika in the aviation ministry.

An EFCC official told the newspaper that letters of invitation to the sacked and suspended officials were already prepared to come over to explain their roles in the alleged different fraudulent activities that took place in the ministry under Sirika.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu sacked the heads of Nigeria’s aviation agencies in December 2023, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), and Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).

Those sacked included Kabir Mohammed of FAAN; Tayib Odunowo of NAMA; Akinola Olateru of NSIB; Prof. Mansur Matazu of NiMet; and Alkali Modibbo, the Rector of NCAT while also suspending the Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Musa Nuhu.

  • FG begins unbundling of DISCOS

    FG begins unbundling of DISCOS

The Federal Government has announced the unbundling of power distribution companies in Nigeria along state lines.

This is due to their large sizes which often result in inefficiency and ineffectiveness.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu stated this on Monday when he received the Senate Committee on Power, led by their Chairman, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe.

Adelabu said the Tinubu-led administration had commenced the restructuring of Nigeria’s 11 power distribution companies.

According to him, the privatisation of the firms would not be reversed but stressed that the Discos would be broken into more efficient structures

The Nigerian government has also ordered the sale of Discos that have been taken over by banks and the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria from its original investors/owners.

The likes of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC; Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC; Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KEDC; and Kano Electricity Distribution Company are all being managed by banks and AMCON.

AEDC is under the management of UBA, and Fidelity Bank manages BEDC, KEDC and Kano Electricity Distribution Company.

AMCON is in charge of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

This is due to their inability to repay their loans to the financial institutions.

The Senate Committee on Power said the distribution companies have failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians since they took over the privatised assets over 10 years ago.

The Minister further revealed that over 100 projects of the Transmission Company of Nigeria have not been completed since 2001, a period of about 23 years.

“We are unbundling the Discos along state lines. Some of the Discos are too big for efficiency. They are too big for effectiveness. Ibadan Disco covers seven states. It is practically impossible for them to be efficient,” he said.

“So we are rearranging and restructuring the Discos along state lines so that each state government will know the responsible Disco for their states.

“Also, the federal and state governments should start exercising their rights in the operation and management of the Discos because we still own 40 per cent in the firms.

“But we have left it for the private sector operators for too long and they have messed it up. So the government must come back to take over its own right in the Discos. We are also planning to franchise the unserved communities under the Discos.”

The minister went ahead to state that “we will start seeing regulations about franchising. The fact you are Eko Disco doesn’t mean that you cannot have smaller Discos that are ready to invest in your unserved communities. So we are looking at franchising.”

  • Former Imo Gov, Ihedioha resigns from PDP

Former Imo Gov, Ihedioha resigns from PDP

Former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has tendered his resignation to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a misalignment between his personal beliefs and the current trajectory of the party.

In a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of his constituency, Mbutu Ward, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Ihedioha expressed his dedication to the advancement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria despite his decision to step away from the party.

Having been a member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, Ihedioha highlighted his contributions to the growth and evolution of the party, noting its historical commitment to internal reforms and providing credible leadership both in and out of power.

However, Ihedioha lamented recent developments within the party, stating that it has deviated from its core principles. He voiced concerns over the party’s inability to enact internal reforms, uphold its own regulations, and effectively oppose the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The letter reads, “Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as one of the founding members. All these years, I have taken pride in the fact that the PDP is a party that will always look inward for internal reforms and provide credible leadership for the people, whether in power or outside power. I have had the benefit of serving and benefiting from the party at various levels.

“Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly, no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.’

“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately. While the decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one. Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”

  • Peter Obi and I never believed in Labour Party ideologies — Doyin Okupe

Peter Obi and I never believed in Labour Party ideologies — Doyin Okupe

Former director-general of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, DDr. Doyin Okupe has said that he and the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, never believed in the ideologies of the party.

Okupe made the claim during an interview on Arise Television.

He said the Labour Party was just a special purpose vehicle for the presidential election.

In January, Okupe resigned his membership of the Labour Party, citing ideological differences.

He said his membership of the party ended the moment Obi lost the election.

“The LP for us — for Peter Obi and I — and those in the leadership of the movement, the party was a special purpose vehicle.

“I have never been a Labour person, I have never operated on the left before but we needed a platform and this was the only platform readily available to us.

“We thought that if we won the election, there are no fast and hard rules about ideologies. You can always find a shade between the left and the right. You can always move to the centre.

“We were hoping and praying that if we won we would find a way to come to some consensus with the Labour.

“Peter Obi is not a Labour person. He is not a leftist person, he is a trader, he is a businessman just like me. I am a liberal democrat, I believe in liberal democracy, I believe in free enterprise,” he added.

  • Again, Dangote reduces diesel, aviation fuel prices

Again, Dangote reduces diesel, aviation fuel prices

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has once more announced a further crash in the prices of diesel and aviation fuel to N940 and N980 per litre, respectively.

This comes in the wake of its widely celebrated price crash to N1,000 barely two weeks ago.

The new price of N940 is applicable to customers buying five million litres and above from the refinery, while N970 is for customers buying one million litres and above.

While speaking on the new development, the Head of Communication, Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, pointed out that the new price is in consonance with the company’s commitment to cushion the effect of economic hardship in Nigeria.

“I can confirm to you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery has entered a strategic partnership with MRS Oil and Gas stations, to ensure that consumers get to buy fuel at affordable price, in all their stations be it Lagos or Maiduguri. You can buy as low as 1 litre of diesel at N1,050 and aviation fuel at N980 at all major airports where MRS operates,” Chiejina said.

He added that the partnership will be extended to other major oil marketers.

“The essence of this is to ensure that retail buyers do not buy at exorbitant prices. The Dangote Group is committed to ensuring that Nigerians have a better welfare and as such, we are happy to announce these new prices and hope that it would go a long way to cushion the effect of economic challenges in the country,” he stated.
