Yekini Nabena, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has leveled serious allegations against Nasir El-rufai, the ex-governor of Kaduna state, claiming he’s behind the escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Sun newspaper, Nabena pointed fingers directly at El-rufai, accusing him of exacerbating the security challenges plaguing the region.

NITDA Warns Nigerians of QR Code Scams, Urges Vigilance

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning to citizens, urging heightened caution when scanning QR codes amidst a sharp rise in fraudulent activities perpetrated by scammers.

In a recent advisory published on its official channels, NITDA sounded the alarm on the growing trend of scammers exploiting QR codes for nefarious purposes, ranging from phishing scams to payment fraud and identity theft.

QR codes, those familiar black-and-white squares containing machine-readable information, have become a popular tool for quick access to URLs and other data via smartphone cameras.

However, NITDA’s advisory serves as a stark reminder to users to exercise utmost vigilance before scanning QR codes, emphasizing the importance of preemptive measures to thwart cyber scams.

According to NITDA, scammers employ sophisticated tactics to carry out their fraudulent activities through QR codes. These tactics include generating codes that lead unsuspecting users to malicious websites or applications, initiating unauthorized transactions, embedding malware or data-stealing scripts, and harvesting personal information for identity theft.

To safeguard against these threats, NITDA recommends several preventive measures, including scrutinizing QR codes from unknown sources, verifying their legitimacy before scanning, and using trusted QR code scanning apps with built-in security features. Additionally, keeping devices updated with the latest antivirus software and security patches is advised to enhance protection against potential cyber threats.

In light of predictions by the Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria regarding an anticipated surge in insider threats driven by the malicious use of artificial intelligence in 2024, NITDA underscores the critical importance of bolstering cybersecurity infrastructure.

This entails investing in advanced security technologies and enhancing the capabilities of cybersecurity personnel to effectively combat evolving cyber threats.

  • Cost of governance: Tinubu initiates the sale of presidential jets

Cost of governance: Tinubu initiates the sale of presidential jets

In a bid to cut the cost of governance, President Tinubu’s has announced plans to divest three aircraft from the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF), a senior official revealed over the weekend.

This strategic move forms part of the administration’s wider efforts to streamline government expenditure. Presently, the fleet comprises a total of 10 aircraft, including six jets and four helicopters, with intentions to reduce the fleet to seven through the proposed sale.

This decision mirrors a previous attempt made during the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari to sell off two aircraft in the fleet, namely a Dassault Falcon 7x executive jet and a Beechcraft Hawker 4000 business jet, back in October 2016.

However, the sale faltered after preferred bidders revised their offer from $24 million to $11 million, a sum rejected by the government at the time.

To alleviate the burden of maintenance costs, the administration had explored alternative avenues, including the possibility of chartering some of the aircraft to interested governors to generate revenue.

The fleet comprises various aircraft models, including Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) 737, Gulfstream G550, Gulfstream G500, Falcon 7X, HS 4000, Agusta 139, and Agusta 101. Notably, the BBJ 737 serves as the Nigerian Air Force One, exclusively utilized by the President for official travel.

While specific details regarding the replacement of the BBJ 737 remain undisclosed, it is noteworthy that the aircraft was acquired for approximately $43 million during the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Escalating concerns over maintenance costs, which have soared to over $5 million in recent months, have prompted President Tinubu to take decisive action. The decision to divest three aircraft deemed the most financially burdensome is aimed at curtailing excessive spending on maintenance.

Over the years, the presidency has allocated significant sums for PAF maintenance, with budgetary provisions ranging from N3.65 billion in 2016 to N25.7 billion in 2023. However, precise expenditure figures remain unconfirmed.

Furthermore, in a separate move geared towards fiscal prudence, President Tinubu has enforced a three-month travel ban on publicly-funded foreign trips by Federal Government officials, with immediate effect.

The utilization of the fleet falls under the purview of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), ensuring efficient management and utilization.

LP crisis: I didn’t promise to build new party – Peter Obi on ignoring national convention

The 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has said he promised to rebuild Nigeria and not to build a new party.

Obi made the remark while disclosing why he ignored the LP’s National convention in Anambra State.

Addressing Nigerians on X Space hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, Peter Obi said he ignored the convention because the party leadership under Julius Abure failed to conduct wide consultation with key stakeholders of the party before embarking on the said convention.

He stressed the need for the right thing to be done to salvage the party, adding that he is more passionate about building a new Nigeria than building a new Labour Party.

“We promised to build Nigeria, we did not promise to build a New Labour Party,” Obi said.

He also threw his weight behind the call for a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement.

“It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process,” he added.

Two factional groups respectively led by Julius Abure and Apapa Lamidi have been claiming supremacy.

Also, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, is against Abure’s leadership of the party

However, Abure was reelected during the controversial national convention organized in Anambra State.
