  • FG Knocks Peter Obi For Faulting 2023 Supplementary Budget

FG Knocks Peter Obi For Faulting 2023 Supplementary Budget

The Federal Government has lambasted Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for allegedly distorting facts for political gains.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris said this while disagreeing to Obi’s criticism of the 2023 supplementary budget.

Idris, while defending the budget, described it as a “bold and pragmatic response” to Nigeria’s economic challenges.

The minister urged Obi to familiarize himself with the details, highlighting allocations for security, agriculture, wage increases, student loans, and social safety nets.

Idris emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting government functions and addressing urgent needs for national recovery.

The supplementary budget, he clarified, resulted from extensive consultations to align with the needs of the people.

Peter Obi had described the passing of the 2023 supplementary budget into law by President Bola Tinubu as wasteful, berating the government for being insensitive and uncaring about the suffering of Nigerians while squandering resources on a mysterious presidential yacht and fleets of SUVs.

Mr Obi’s criticisms come shortly after Mr Tinubu signed the 2023 supplementary appropriation bill of N2.17 trillion into law on Wednesday.

“No item of urgent social welfare has yet featured in the supplementary budget being orchestrated by this government. Instead, the items being made to dominate public discourse on the budget include a mysterious Presidential Yacht, Presidential Jets, the furnishing of already lavishly furnished presidential quarters and offices, fleets of luxury SUVs etc,” Mr Obi said.

Speaking further, he said, “this portrays a Government that is totally uncaring and insensitive to the suffering of the majority, and indifferent to the mood of the nation.

“The government’s overall attitude does not indicate that it is aware that the country is in a huge crisis, nor is the government in tune with the plight of the generality of our people. Even worse is the fact that most of the funding for these profligate expenditures will be largely borrowed. The least that Nigerians expect from the government at this difficult moment is empathy and realism, not lavish indulgence.”

Some line items, specifically presidential yacht and fleets of SUVs, in the supplementary budget sparked reactions from Nigerians. But Mr Tinubu’s government claimed the past regime of former president Muhammadu Buhari started payment for the presidential yacht for the Nigerian navy.

Many Nigerians have voiced their concerns and criticism, with a significant number expressing displeasure about how such a luxury item can find its way into the supplementary budget.

The Senate Committee on Navy, under the leadership of Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State and the current representative for Ogun East Senatorial District, has called for a probe into the matter.

FCTA Launches Health Insurance Program For Vulnerable Pregnant Women

In a bid to mitigate maternal mortality in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a specialized health insurance enrollment initiative designed for vulnerable pregnant women.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary of Health Services and Environment Secretariat, disclosed this during an impromptu visit to the Wassa Primary Health Care Centre within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The objective of the visit, as outlined in a statement released by the secretariat, is to appraise the facility’s infrastructure, the quality of healthcare services provided, and the alignment of its operations with established healthcare standards.

Dr. Fasawe emphasized that the insurance program aims to offer comprehensive healthcare assistance to pregnant women facing financial constraints while simultaneously reducing maternal mortality in the FCT.

She underscored that every FCT resident should have access to high-quality healthcare services, irrespective of their social and economic status.

She further expressed the urgency of the secretariat meeting the populace’s needs, which includes the provision of clean and safe drinking water to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

Recognizing the critical importance of proper healthcare during pregnancy and the fundamental right of all pregnant women to essential healthcare without financial barriers, the secretariat has taken a proactive step by launching a special enrollment process for economically disadvantaged women. This process will provide them with the essential care they deserve.

The insurance coverage will encompass a broad spectrum of services, including prenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, and other essential medical attention, all aimed at significantly reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, Dr. Fasawe added.

She also stressed the government’s dedication to enhancing the health and well-being of the population through innovative healthcare interventions and community outreach programs.

Additionally, FCT Minister Mr. Nyesom Wike has directed the secretariat to conduct advocacy and sensitization campaigns, enlightening the public on how and where to access affordable healthcare services within the FCT.

This has led to flight disruptions and chaotic scenes around the airport area.

The demonstration comes in response to the recent assault on Joe Ajaero, NLC’s president in Imo state.

  • 151 Days After Unlawful Detention, Court Grants Emefiele Bail

151 Days After Unlawful Detention, Court Grants Emefiele Bail

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, on Wednesday admitted the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to conditional bail after 151 days in detention.

Justice Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi held that Emefiele had stayed in government security custody beyond the time stipulated by law.

The Judge also predicated his decision on the fact that the Federal Government had completed investigation into the allegations against the former CBN Chief and had even prepared the charged against him as far as August this year.

On the bail conditions, the court held that Emefiele must be released to his Senior lawyer Matthew Burkaa SAN who must produce him any day the Federal Government chooses to arraign him.

Emefilele is also to deposit his travelling passport with the Registrar of the Court pending his formal arraignment.

In a ruling on the application for bail argued by Mathew Burkaa, SAN, Justice Adeniyi held that it is in the best interest of justice and fair play especially the provision of section 35 of Nigeria’s Constitution to follow the rule of law.

The Judge specifically said that there must be an end to detention without trial by the federal holiday.

Both the FG, and AGF re-presented by Oyin Koleoso had strongly objected to Emefiele’ s request for bail on the ground that he would interfere with the November 15 arraignment but did not tell the court how the interference would be done.

EFCC on its part through its counsel, Farouk Abudalla insisted that Emefiele had not spent three months in its own custody and urged the Court to refuse the bail request.

Counsel to the applicant however punctured the opposition of the Federal Government adding that the claim of likelihood of interference in arraignment was speculative because his client was not declared a flight risk.

He told Justice Ademiyi to disregard the claim of EFCC that Emefiele was brought to its custody only October 26.

The Senior lawyer informed the Court that the former CBN boss was investigated by a team of inter Ministerial Investigators from EFCC, Police and Department of the State Security Service DSSS which jointly constituted government agency.

It’s Not Mandatory For Election To Hold In Imo On Saturday -NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised concerns about the November 11 governorship election in Imo State, suggesting that it may not proceed as scheduled.

Uchenna Ekwe, the NLC Head of International Relations, expressed these doubts during an interview on Channels TV on Wednesday morning.

Ekwe emphasized that the Imo State population has been enduring ongoing violence, which has cast doubt on the election’s viability as a means for meaningful change.

He questioned the legitimacy of past elections in the state, pointing out the lack of visibility of posters from other political parties and the disruption of an INEC meeting.

Ekwe further highlighted the loss of faith in the election process among both workers and the general populace in Imo State.

He asserted that the prevailing violence and fear may deter people from participating in the election.

He stressed that the world would not come to an end if the election did not take place as planned, underscoring the urgent need to address the security concerns and restore confidence in the electoral process in Imo State.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja complied with the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory’s order regarding the case of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

After being held in custody by Federal Government security agencies for over 150 days, Emefiele was brought to court in accordance with the order issued by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi.

Former CBN Governor Emefiele, dressed in a yellow Babariga and a Hausa cap, entered the courtroom at around 12:30, accompanied by a group of EFCC operatives providing security.

Outside the court premises, Emefiele’s friends and relatives eagerly awaited the Judge’s arrival for a hearing in his fundamental human rights case.

Justice Adeniyi reaffirmed his order on Monday, which mandated that the detained former CBN governor be brought to court on November 8.

The court also emphasized the option for the anti-graft agency to grant bail to Emefiele in accordance with the law on fundamental human rights.

Political thugs allegedly connected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) launched an attack on the residence of Sheik Ibrahim Jibrin, the Director-General of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Campaign Council in Anyigba, Kogi State.

This attack occurred early in the morning, resulting in the death of one police officer and four others.

The assailants, armed with an armored personnel carrier (APC), forcibly entered the compound by breaking the gate.

They fired upon gaining entry, killing Officer Atabor, the police guard.

According to the SDP, this attack was carried out by a “rogue force” reportedly assembled by Governor Yahaya Bello in preparation for the upcoming governorship election.

The SDP alleged that this rogue force comprised thugs led by a wanted individual, Friday Makama, navy mercenaries led by N.U Akalezi of the Nigerian Navy, and DSS operatives under the command of Mr. Tosin Ajayi.

The attack lasted for over an hour, leaving several individuals injured. Besides Officer Atabor’s death, six other individuals, believed to be policemen on official duty, were reportedly taken by the attackers.

Comrade I D Ijele, the campaign council’s Head of New Media, is feared to have been abducted during the attack, with no contact since the incident began.

The SDP called upon the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to transfer the commissioner allegedly involved in these activities to ensure a free and fair election in Kogi State.
