    Tinubu Sacks FIRS Boss, Nami, Appoints Zacch Adedeji 

    President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Hon. Zacch Adedeji as the new Acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

    Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President, (Media & Publicity), disclosed in a statement on Thursday.

    Tinubu also directed the erstwhile FIRS Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Nami, to proceed on three months pre-retirement leave, as provisioned by Public Service Rule (PSR) 120243, with immediate effect, leading to his eventual retirement from service on December 8, 2023.

    Hon. Zacch Adedeji is hereby appointed in acting capacity for a 90-day period before his subsequent confirmation as the substantive Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service for a term of four years in the first instance.

    He most recently served the nation as the Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, following meritorious service terms as the Oyo State Commissioner of Finance and as the Executive Secretary / CEO of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC).

    Adedeji is a First Class graduate in accounting from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

    He also holds an MSc degree in accounting from the same OAU.

    The new FIRS chairman also holds a PhD public sector finance, OAU.

    He is a fellow, ICAN, CITN, alumnus, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, ex-manager, Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) and ex-commissioner for finance, Oyo State.

    He is also former Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC).

    By these directives of the President, the new appointment takes immediate effect.

    Grid Collapse: Power Restoration In Advanced Stages, TCN Assures

    The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that the national grid restoration nationwide has reached advanced stages.

    This is contained in a statement issued by Mrs Ndidi Mbah, TCN General Manager on Public Affairs in Abuja.

    The company said that power supply has been restored to the West, North Central, South, East, and a large portion of the Northern parts of the country.

    The TCN said that grid collapsed totally at about 12.35am causing outage nationwide, after over 421 days of consistent grid stability.

    The company said that in the course of the grid restoration, the process initially suffered a setback but this does not amount to another collapse.

    “In the course of any grid restoration process, challenges may be encountered. This happened while the grid restoration was in progress, but it was promptly addressed.

    “It would be recalled that the last total system collapse recorded was on July 20, 2022.

    “Prior to this, the system had been stable in spite of the challenges posed by zero spinning reserve and lack of System Control and lack of adequate Data Acquisition (SCADA) essential to a strong and stable grid, among others,” the company said.

    The TCN said it has been able to maintain 400 days of grid stability because it developed and deployed in-house stop gap measures and tools that it has continued to use to manage the nations grid, ensuring its stability.

    The company also said that the collapse that occurred after a fire incident on the Kanji/Jebba 330 Kilo Volt line II was being investigated, with a view to forestall future occurrence and invariably further strengthen the grid.

    Customs Seizes Smuggled Donkey Skins, Petrol In Adamawa, Taraba

    The Adamawa/ Taraba Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) seized raw donkey skin, petrol and other smuggled goods worth N19.4 million in August.

    The Comptroller in-charge of the command, Alhaji Salisu Kazaure, announced this while addressing newsmen in Yola on Thursday.

    He said that the siezed items included 200 pieces of raw donkey skin and vehicle used in conveying the smuggled commodity, as well as 127 bags of 50kg foreign rice.

    According to him, the other seized item is 12,355 litres of petrol inside jerry cans.

    “The command will not rest on its oars in the fight against smuggling being perpetrated along the waterways and on land,” he said.

    He praised the headquarters of NCS for prompt logistics support which, he said, enabled officers and men of the command to perform optimally.

    “We will sustain collaboration with sister agencies and relevant stakeholders to check this ugly trend,” he added.

    Military Neutralises 151 Terrorists, Apprehends 456 in 2 weeks –DHQ

    The Defence Headquarters says troops of Armed Forces of Nigeria, have in the last two weeks eliminated a total of 151 terrorists and apprehended 456 others in different operations across the country.

    The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, stated this while giving update of military operations across the country on Thursday in Abuja.

    Buba said the troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised 44 terrorists, arrested 21 and rescued four kidnapped hostages during the period.

    He said the troops recovered 17 AK47 rifles, three locally fabricated rifles, three locally made guns, one berretta pistol, three Dane guns and 116 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo.

    Also recovered according to him, are five rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 13 rounds of 9mm ammo, 20 rounds of 7.62 mm x 54 ammo, 42 empty and cases of 7.62 mm x 54 ammo.

    Others are 12 magazines, 50 jerry cans of PMS, three vehicles, five mobile phone, six motorcycles, three cutlasses and the sum of N3.18 million.

    Buba said the troops arrested some suspected terrorists’ collaborators in Jere and  Biu in Borno, as well as Gujba Local Government Area in Yobe.

    He said that troops also ambushed and raided suspected terrorists’ hideouts in Konduga and Gwoza Local Government Areas of Borno.

    The director said that the offensive resulted in elimination of terrorists and recovery of arms and ammunitions.

    In North Central, Buba said the troops of Operation Safe Haven neutralised 16 terrorists, arrested 16 and rescued one kidnapped hostage within the period.

    He said they also recovered 12 AK47 rifles, two pistols, five locally fabricated rifles, six dane guns, 32 rounds of 7.62mm special, 15 magazines and three motorcycles.

    Under Operation Whirl Stroke, he said the troops neutralised 15 terrorists, arrested six and rescued one kidnapped hostage as well as recovery of arms and ammunition.

    In North West, the defence spokesman said the troops of Operations Hadarin Daji and Whirl Punch, neutralised 35 terrorists, arrested eight and rescued 17 kidnapped hostages within the period.

    He added that the air components of the various operations had continued to annihilate the terrorists from their various hideouts with series of air interactions.

    WFP Pledges $2.5bn To Fight Hunger In Nigeria

    The World Food Programme (WFP) has pledged to commit 2.5 billion dollars to strengthen and support Nigeria’s efforts towards sustainable food security and zero hunger across the country.

    The WFP Country Director, Mr David Stevesson, disclosed this when he led the UN agency’s team to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, in Abuja.

    “We talked about zero hunger, we talked about humanitarian hubs in every local government area in the country, we talked about the world food programme.

    “The potential to support those hubs through buying food locally and assisting the needy with cash transfers and food.

    “Let me announce here that the World Food Programme is committed to spending 2.5 billion dollars to fight hunger in the next five years in Nigeria,” he said.

    Stevesson said that the agency had already captured 2.1 million beneficiaries under the programme with the hope of maintaining working relationship with the ministry to achieve the target.

    He expressed the agency’s readiness to support the Federal Government’s determination to address humanitarian crises and poverty issues, especially as it related to food security.

    “We are excited by President Bola Tinubu’s commitment and drive to eradicate poverty and reduce humanitarian crises in Nigeria.

    “The new energy which the Minister is bringing into the space gives us hope that we will accomplish a lot together,” he said.

    While congratulating the minister on her appointment, the WFP Country Director expressed optimism on the ability of the minister to deliver on the mandate.

    In her response, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, said that the intervention would go a long way to address some of the humanitarian challenges affecting the country.

    According to her, “Zero Hunger” is one of the projects the Ministry has initiated as part of poverty and humanitarian response efforts.

    “We, therefore, appeal to the WFP to key into it by working with the Ministry to achieve results because, this intervention will go a long way to address some of the biggest challenges the country is facing” she said.

    Edu told the WFP delegation that over 133 million people in Nigeria are affected by multi-dimensional poverty.

    She said that the National Homegrown School Feeding was one aspect of the Zero Hunger Project.

    “The Ministry will be working on different nutritional food programme that will target pregnant women, children under the age of five years and school pupils.

    “Feeding persons who are affected by humanitarian crises, the aged including refugees that have found themselves within our space.

    “Currently, we have over 80,000 persons living as refugees across Nigeria,” she said.

    She said that the ministry had introduced an innovative way of rejigging the humanitarian response in the country.

    “Part of the innovation we are bringing on board is what we call humanitarian hub because we want to create 774 of these humanitarian hubs in each local government across Nigeria,” the minister assured.

    Soludo Invites IPMAN Over N900m Diesel Debt Claims

    The Anambra Government has invited the leadership of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) for a meeting over the claim of over N900 million debts to contractors who supplied diesel.

    Mr Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs said this in Awka on Thursday while reacting to the association’s letter of appeal.

    IPMAN had in the letter begged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to pay members who were contractors to the Anambra government for the diesel they supplied to power streetlight generators in March and April 2022.

    IPMAN said the debt was to the tune of N900,664,805.

    Nwabunwanne told journalists that the government had taken notice of their complaint and would do everything to protect their businesses.

    He however blamed the delay on discrepancies in the claims of the contractors.

    The commissioner said his office will meet with the leadership IPMAN, the umbrella body of the marketers, to reconcile the figures for settlement.

    “I have invited the leadership of IPMAN for a meeting early next week for discussion, it is clear that they do not have the correct information on our dealings with the contractors, there are discrepancies.

    “So, the meeting will enable us to reconcile these discrepancies and progress to the next step.

    “The Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration is a business friendly one and will do all that is possible to support and help them stay in business,” he said.

    FG Commences Haulage Of Cargo From Apapa Port To Ibadan

    The Federal Government has flagged off the haulage of cargo from the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa, Lagos State to the Ibadan Dry Inland Container Port in Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State.

    The Minister of Transportation, Sen. Saidu Alkali, who embarked on his inaugural official tour of the Lagos-Ibadan rail, flagged-off the first cargo movement through the rail corridor on behalf of the Federal Government.

    Speaking on the occasion, Alkali disclosed that three coaches of 30 wagons, shall be loaded daily from the Apapa Ports to Ibadan as part of Government’s effort to decongest the Ports, save Shippers from accumulation of demurrages while also facilitating seamless operations at the Lagos ports.

    Furthermore, efforts to decongest the ports are still ongoing as the Minister revealed plans to rehabilitate the Lagos to Kano narrow gauge stating that by the time this section is finished, the issue of decongesting the Lagos ports, providing alternative modes of transportation and providing sustainable and cost-effective means of transportation would have been addressed to a certain extent.

    Furthermore, he stated that the haulage of cargo from the Ports would commence on one track, as completion of the other two tracks leading into the Port is being hindered by the Nigerian Customs scanning Centre. He however assured on efforts to liaise with the Minister of Finance and the Nigerian Customs Service to suggest relocation of the scanning centre.

    On the issue of the sustainability of the railway sector in the country, the Minister said, we are going to ensure that the existing contracts are executed and it is the vision of the administration to ensure that the transport sector is enhanced especially with the removal of the fuel subsidy that will make the cost of transportation much secure and cost effective.

    The Hon Minister also inspected Kajola Wagon Assembly Plant which is the first in West Africa built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility to the country is meant to create employment for more than 500 youths.

    In his remarks, the Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Engr. Fidet Okhiria said the Corporation was operating rail freight service on the Lagos-Kano with the narrow gauge but stopped due activities of vandals.

    He however assured that the NRC has about 120 narrow gauge wagons and has also placed more orders through the China Civil Engineering Construction Company to adequately support government’s efforts to support trade and decongest the ports.

    Nationwide Blackout As Electricity Grid Collapses Again

    Nigeria has again been thrown into darkness after the national grid system, operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State collapsed.

    A check in the early hour ofThursday showed that the grid plummeted to a meagre 273 megawatts of electricity coming from two out of the over 27 electricity generation.

    This comes barely a week after TCN, rolled out the drums to celebrate a questionable 400 days of grid stability.

    A number of Distribution Companies confirmed that the grid went down at 00:41 AM, disclosing that most of their feeders are out.

    As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, five generating plants were on the grid. Afam VI had 0.70MW, Dadinkowa was generating 0.00MW, Ibom Power had 32.90MW, Jebba had 240MW and Olorunsogo was on the grid with zero generation.

    At about 1AM midnight, the total power on the grid was 35MW, indicating that the country experienced a total collapse.

    The grid went to 193MW at about 3AM before climbing to 273MW when this report was filed.

    The TCN has not responded to inquiries by our correspondent about the development.

    N40m Suit: Court Admits Car Dealer’s Evidence Against Oil Firm, Others

    Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Kuje, on Wednesday, admitted in evidence, documents and letters to the Central Bank of Nigeria, tendered by Tripple C Motors Ltd against Pagmat Oil and Gas Nig. Ltd, Prudential Steps Savings & Loan and a new generation bank.

    The documents were tendered in evidence through, Dr Adamu Kukuri, the sole witness called by the car dealer in a bid to prove his case against the defendants. 

    Dr Kukuri, Director Tripple C Motors Ltd who adopted his witness statement on oath as his evidence was led in evidence by his lawyer, Ojonimi Apeh Esq.

    Some of the documents tendered by Dr Kukuri and admitted by the court were    complaint letters written to CBN, police interim investigation report, etc.

    Barrister Elvis Utulu, who represented Fidelity bank did not oppose the admissibility of the tendered documents except three letters that were not front loaded.

    But Apeh explained that though, the letters were not front loaded, “they are pleaded”. 

    However, Utulu insisted that he has to go through the documents to enable him prepare for his cross examination of the witness.

    Dr Kukuri urged the court to give judgment in his favour by granting all his prayers. 

    Meanwhile, the court has adjourned to September 18, for cross examination of the claimant’s witness.

    Earlier in the proceeding, Apeh had informed Justice Nwecheonwu, that Pagmat Oil and Gas Nig. Ltd; and Prudential Steps Savings & Loan (2nd and 3rd defendants) respectively, have not been appearing in the matter, despite being served with hearing notices.

    By the suit, Tripple C Motors is claiming against the defendants jointly and severally, the sum of over N40million as compensation for unlawful withholding of its money for a period of 43 months.

    Consequently, the claimant wants the court to declare that the refusal and failure of the defendants to pay it the sum of ₦86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) for supply of cars it made for, and at the instance of the defendants as at when due resulted in the loss of profits/earnings to the claimant in the sum of at least N4,300,000.00 (Four Million Three Hundred Thousand Naira) only per month for a period of 43 months cumulating loss of at least N34,400,000.00 (Thirty-Four Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) only for that period and thereby rendering the defendants liable to the claimant in damages.

    “An order directing the defendant to pay the claimant the sum of N34,400,000.00 (Thirty-Four Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) only as projected returns and/or loss of anticipated profits/earnings.

    They also want twenty percent interest on the judgment sum per month from the date of judgment until the judgment debt is fully liquidated.  

    “An order directing the defendants to pay the claimant the sum of ₦6,000,000.00 (Six Million Naira) only as cost of this suit. 

    “A declaration that the claimant was entitled to payment of the sum of ₦86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) by the defendant within 30 days of the supply of the cars for and at the instance of the defendant being the value of the cars supplied for and at the instance of the defendant by the Plaintiff on 28/12/2018.

    “A declaration that the refusal and failure of the defendant to pay the Claimant the sum of ₦86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) within 30 banking days from the date of supply of the cars by the claimant for, and at the instance of the defendants is a breach of contract between the claimant and the defendants. 

    In the alternative, the Plaintiff seeks “A declaration that the refusal and failure of the defendants to pay the Claimant the sum of ₦86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) for supply of cars made by the claimant for, and at the instance of the defendants as at when due renders the defendants liable to payment of compensation to the claimant for wrongly holding onto the money of the claimant in a commercial transaction. 

    “An order directing the defendant to pay to the plaintiff an amount which is equal to 20% (twenty percent of N86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) per annum from 12/02/2019 when the said sum of N86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) was due but not paid by the defendant until 06/10/2022 when the defendant paid the claimant the principal contract sum of N86,000,000.00 (Eighty-Six Million Naira Only) as compensation for the wrongful withholding of claimant’s money in a commercial transaction for a period of over 43 months without justification.

    Twenty percent interest on the judgment sum per month from the date of judgment until the judgment debt is fully liquidated.  

    “An order directing the defendants to pay the claimant the sum of ₦6,000,000.00 (Six Million Naira) only as cost of this suit. 

    In a statement of claim, the Claimant avers that the vehicles were only delivered based on the fact that the Block Funds/Irrevocable Standing Order, dated 20th December, 2018 was issued by the banks Utako branch Manager and handed to Dr. Adamu Kukuri, the Claimant’s Director.

    The Claimant averred that upon the expiration of 30 (Thirty) banking days after delivery of the 7 vehicles, no money was paid into her account with Zenith Bank Plc as agreed to and undertaken in the Block Funds/Irrevocable Standing Order.

    NSCDC Apprehends 10 Oil Thieves, Seizes 28,000 Litres Diesel

    The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken into custody ten individuals suspected of being involved in pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and unlawful dealings in petroleum products.

    During the operation, the command also seized nine vehicles carrying unlawfully refined petroleum products, which were concealed in cellophane bags, and confiscated 28,225 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.

    Among the ten apprehended suspects is Chinedu Michael, a repeat offender who had been previously granted bail two months ago following his arrest for engaging in illegal petroleum product refining by the Corps.

    Commandant Basil Igwebueze, while parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, highlighted that the arrests took place at various locations across the state, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Anti-vandal Unit and the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army.

    Commandant Igwebueze emphasized that the suspects would face legal charges, and both the confiscated products and vehicles would be forfeited, with the proceeds remitted to the federal government.

    He reaffirmed the commitment of the Command to its mandate of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, while also advocating for stricter laws against crude oil theft.
