  • Good governance is required to end terrorism – CDS

Good governance is required to end terrorism – CDS

As part of efforts to boost the morale of the forces, the CDS disclosed that starting this year, the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day shall be changed to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in order to reward the gallantry of existing combatants.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa has attributed the delay in winning the war against terrorism to the absence of good governance at the sub-national levels.

He said the armed forces’ efforts must be complemented by good governance at the federal, state, and local government levels.

He also revealed that the armed forces is mainstreaming welfare packages to motivate the combatants.

In that regard, he said there is a proposal to change the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

He said the name change is informed by the objective “of celebrating both the dead and the living.”

According to him, “this year’s event of Armed Forces Day entails celebrating those combatants on active duty, families of the deceased and the dead officers.”

Speaking this morning on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, General Musa said a situation where some Nigerians live in conditions that make it seem like they are not part of an organised modern society makes them vulnerable to the manipulation of those that come to recruit them into violent crimes like terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

The CDS therefore, calls on leaders at the sub-national levels to up their games to make it sync with governance efforts at the federal level.

“So when you go and see people living in a manner as if they are not part of an organised modern society, they will be open to other interests to manipulate,” he said.

Another factor, he said had made the war to linger is the access of the terrorists to foreign funding.

He said the Nigerian armed forces had found a cache of foreign currencies on some of the arrested terrorists.

In a bid to eliminate this causative factor, he said the armed forces are collaborating with relevant government agencies to track the source of these funds.

“So, that’s the oxygen we want to cut off,” the CDS disclosed.

General Musa also cited “the nature of the enemy the army is dealing with” as another reason why the war on terror has lingered. According to him, the enemy appears like every normal citizen.

He explained that this was the reason the army adopted “the non-kinetic approach that is based on the understanding that the war can not be fought by the armed forces alone but by all citizens and other stakeholders.”

“Also, there are saboteurs who provide support for the non-state actors just to make it seem as though Nigeria is ungovernable.”

General Musa disclosed that it was based on these discoveries that the country is working closely with countries in the Sahel to fortify the international boundaries.

He said the window was still open on the possibility of convincing the three member countries that recently left the ECOWAS to reconsider their stance.

  • Kano Emirate Tussle: The rumpus is far from over

Kano Emirate Tussle: The rumpus is far from over

They fault the Kano State Government’s interpretation of the judgement of the Court of Appeal regarding the Emir of Kano throne, saying it was concerned with the government’s stance on the court ruling.

Danmalam said contrary to the opinion of the government, the Court of Appeal never validated the disputed Emirate Council Law of 2024.

Similarly, he said, the Court of Appeal did not validate the disputed current government’s actions regarding the chieftaincy appointments and reforms in the state’s traditional institutions.

He argued that the Court of Appeal never validated, legalised or upheld the disputed actions of the Executive Governor of Kano State pursuant to the disputed Emirate Council Law of 2024.

“Independent and unbiased minds appreciate the fact that the judgement of the Court of Appeal are two in numbers.

“One overturned the ruling of the Federal High Court on jurisdiction and the other overturned the entire judgement of the Kano State High Court,” he said.

Aminu Ado Bayero (l), Muhammadu Sanusi II (r)

According to him, the judgement of the Court of Appeal in respect of the Federal High Court ruling held that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters.

“The judgement is not in support of any of the postulations of the Kano State government.

“On the other side of the divide, the judgement of the Court of Appeal in the sister appeal is clearly in favour of His Highness Aminu Ado Bayero and the other 4 Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye.

“This is because the Kano State High Court had earlier declared them improper by virtue of the new Emirate Law of 2024 and further directed the removal of His Highness Aminu Ado Bayero,’’ he said.

He said the suit before the High Court was instituted by the government seeking nullification of the Emirship of Bayero, which the court granted to pave way for legitimacy of Alhaji Muhammad Sunusi II.

Danmalam said the implications of the Appeal Court judgement was that the continuous occupation of the throne by Bayero remained legitimate while the attempted enthronement of Sunusi remained questionable.

“We extend our appreciation to the judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness.

“We therefore strongly advise the Kano State Government to stop misleading itself and the public that the judgement of the Court of Appeal is in its favour,” he said.

Most news organisations, including the Nigerian Anchor recalls that the Kano State Government welcomed the judgement as a validation of Sanusi’s Emirship,

“This ruling validates the government’s lawful actions and clarifies jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, reinforcing the constitutional boundaries of the courts in such affairs,“ said Mr Haruna Dederi the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.

However, the Bayero camp has indicated that it would appeal against the Appeal Court judgement at the Supreme Court.

“I have already instructed my lawyers to obtain a certified true copy of the judgement.

“Once an appeal is lodged at the Supreme Court, the decision of a lower court is stayed until the case is fully resolved,” said Aminu Dan’Agundi, senior counsel to Bayero.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was first crowned Sarki Muhammadu Sunusi II (anglicized as Sanusi) on 9 June 2014, the fifty-seventh monarch of the ancient-city Kano.

He was however, ousted in 2020 by then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state after being accused of showing “insubordination” to the authorities.

His supporters were however, of the believe that he was sacked as he showed signs of opposing the re-election of the governor.

After his dethronement, Governor Ganduje influenced the Kano state house of assembly to pass a law that created five new emirates in the state and appointed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the new Emir in Kano.

The Emir of Kano, hierarchically is the fourth-most-important Islamic traditional ruler in Nigeria after the Sultan of Sokoto, Shehu of Borno and Emir of Gwandu.

Informed sources in Kano opine that the current ping pong represents power play between the federal government and the kano state government, with each favouring a particular candidate as emir.

  • Joseph Aoun Elected Lebanon’s New President

Joseph Aoun Elected Lebanon’s New President

Lebanon’s political deadlock has ended with the election of Army Chief Joseph Aoun as the new president.

This decision came after multiple attempts to fill the vacancy left by former President Michel Aoun, who served until October 2022.

Political negotiations, often hindered by the split between Lebanon’s Western and Iran-aligned factions, had failed for nearly two years.

The breakthrough in the election followed a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States, ending the November 2024 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

This ceasefire played a crucial role in shifting Lebanon’s political landscape, with Joseph Aoun’s leadership playing a vital role in the implementation of the ceasefire terms.

His position was further solidified as the army was deployed to Hezbollah-controlled regions in southern Lebanon.

Aoun’s election has garnered support from both Saudi Arabia and the United States, signaling their growing influence in Lebanon’s political scene.

As a Maronite Christian, his ascension to the presidency aligns with Lebanon’s confessional power-sharing structure, marking a new chapter for the country after a prolonged leadership vacuum.

  • Morka Cries Out Over Death Threats After Controversial Remarks on Obi

Morka Cries Out Over Death Threats After Controversial Remarks on Obi

Like a hunter that is now been hunted, All Progressives Party Spokesman, Felix Morka, after an incendiary remark that was allegedly aimed at inciting the public against Mr. Peter Obi, a leading opposing figure, is now crying foul after his comments backfired at him.

A distraught Morka, appeared on Arise TV this morning to cry that he and his family have been threatened with death following his recent comments about Peter Obi.

Morka’s remarks, made during an interview on Arise Television, were reportedly misconstrued by Obi as threatening.

Morka revealed that he had documented over 400 threats, including around 200 specific death threats, many with graphic descriptions of harm.

Morka denied making any statement that could be seen as threatening to Obi, insisting that the threats were issued by individuals acting on their own, Punch reports.

He assured that he would submit the threats to law enforcement for investigation.

The controversy stemmed from Morka’s criticism of Obi’s comments about President Bola Tinubu’s government, where he suggested that Obi “deserved whatever came his way.”

This led to strong reactions, with figures like Atiku Abubakar calling for an apology from the APC and the Labour Party demanding action against Morka.

  • Tinubu’s Cabal More Dangerous Than Buhari’s – Dalung

Tinubu’s Cabal More Dangerous Than Buhari’s – Dalung

Former Youth and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has raised concerns about a powerful inner circle within President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He described this group as highly skilled and more influential than the cabal that operated under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dalung noted that members of Tinubu’s cabal possess advanced knowledge of governance and power, enabling them to control access to the president and manipulate government processes.

He contrasted this with Buhari’s cabal, which he characterized as less experienced and limited in strategy.

Criticizing the denial of cabals in Nigerian politics, Dalung warned that their unchecked influence undermines governance and negatively impacts ordinary citizens.

He questioned the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ well-being, citing widespread frustration among Nigerians.
