  • Gov Inuwa’s new 4-year term, sign of greater things for Gombe

Gov Inuwa’s new 4-year term, sign of greater things for Gombe

Gombe State’s ascendancy to preeminence in the national and international political terrain under Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya is quite remarkable and historic.

The remarkable successes recorded by the Inuwa administration reflect a determination to create a new Gombe with limitless opportunities, thereby remaking the socio-economic and infact political fabric of the people towards a shared journey of good governance, prosperity and possibilities.

At every event or fora these days, Gombe State enjoys a prime of place, especially when the issues of good governance constitute the subject matter.

Just recently, specifically at the farewell dinner organized by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), in honor of outgoing governors, Inuwa was accosted by the media and asked to share his views on governance, policies and development. Of course true to his character he didn’t disappoint.  He emphasised the need for leaders to remain focused and not to allow distraction of any sort or form, maintaining that “it is the leaders that guide and control the movement and we should therefore be on the positive side to direct and help the people through our policies and programmes”.

Speaking on his ‘magic wand’ that saw to the incredible transformation of Gombe State in less than 4 years of his stewardship, Governor Inuwa said, ” We thank God we didn’t go in blindfolded.  We went with a clear mission and vision, and Ahamdulillah we’ve been able to cultivate the grounds on which we are able to impact positively on the lives of our people through the projects and programmes we’re executing”.

The governor said sheer determination, hardwork and the passion to deliver good services to the people were largely responsible for the giant strides being witnessed in Gombe State under his stewardship.

Gombe has transformed into a beacon of accelerated growth and development, firmly establishing itself as the benchmark for progress. Step by step, it is attaining the position we envisioned for it. This remarkable achievement is a direct outcome of the Governor’s unwavering determination and vision to forge a legacy that  propels the state towards becoming one of the top ten strongest economies in the country.

The pervading optimism in Gombe State is now giving the people a shared hope for a brighter tomorrow. The power of leadership and vision have reshaped our collective being, now dwelling more on the big picture of what Gombe State can be if we believe in ourselves and do the right things in a focused manner as we follow resolutely the development trajectory carefully drawn and being executed to fully harness our potentials.

In the true spirit of our renaissance, therefore, I am sure everyone who has followed the enviable turnaround in education, healthcare delivery, infrastructural development, agriculture and human capital development in the state will agree with the realities of a new era of excellence.

Let’s start with the cosmopolitanism posture of Inuwa. Gombe, the state capital, like most of the other towns around the state, has now grown phenomenally big into a modern city with mind-blowing infrastructure and amenities as envisioned. The state is certainly making history.

The educational status of Gombe which was at the base among the 36 states of Nigeria, with secondary school students’ success ratio of 29 percent, is now at 87 percent. Thanks to Inuwa’s intervention through the state of emergency on education.  Just this year, the Inuwa-led administration pumped over N4 billion into the sector and declared an end to the state of emergency owing to the successes recorded.

Last year, the Dan Majen Gombe was on the podium at the United Kingdom’s renowned Royal Institute of International Affairs known as Chatham House. The Chatham House is a political turf of World Leaders.

Inuwa was found worthy of being called upon to showcase the good works he has been doing in Gombe State’s health sector. His brilliance in Chatham House is still reverberating in Nigeria’s political circles.

On security matters, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Ahmed Baba, at the first Security Summit organized by Gombe State adjudged the Jewel State as a state to emulate in terms of peace and balanced security status.

From all indications, the next four years will come with so much improvement in the quality of life of the people. This is a major point of considerable effect on why government exists and what should really matter in our evaluation of leadership as a harbinger of change.

From this standpoint, it is clear that the Inuwa Yahaya administration is strategically building a new Gombe State that is innovative, competitive and prosperous.

The Gombe people are witnesses to the massive building of schools, upgrade of boarding schools and equipping them, enhanced investment in constructing many roads through his flagship project, the network 11-100 and economic sense of boosting agriculture, building and equipping various hospitals, revitalization of healthcare centres statewide, providing water for all, solid empowerment to unleash the creative energy of our people in business. A ground breaking idea of establishing the Gombe Industrial Park which ultimately will attract a cluster of multiple industries that will create thousands of good jobs is fantastic.

During Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s initial term, he achieved a remarkable transformation of Gombe state, leaving no critical sector untouched. His dedication ensured the state’s continued prosperity.

As he prepares to begin his second term in a few days, we eagerly anticipate an even more aggressive focus on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and other vital areas of growth and development.

Inded the future of Gombe State is very positive and one is inclined to believe convincingly that the Inuwa Yahaya-led administration has done exceedingly well in its first term and the pervading optimism is now giving the people a shared hope for a brighter tomorrow as the  Governor sets to be inaugurated for another four year term.

  • Nigeria’s forex inflow grows by 4% to $17.6bn –CBN

Nigeria’s forex inflow grows by 4% to $17.6bn –CBN

Nigeria’s total forex inflow into the economy increased by 4% quarter-by-quarter (q/q) to $17.6 billion.

According to the latest Quarterly Statistical Bulletin (QSB) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the key driver of the rise in forex inflow in Q4 relative to the previous quarter was forex revenues from autonomous sources, which climbed by 18 percent q/q to $11.4 billion.

In contrast, forex inflow through the CBN, which accounted for about 35 percent of the total forex inflow, decreased by -15 percent q/q to $6.2 billion.

However, on a year-to-year (y/y) basis, forex inflow into the economy declined by -15 percent y/y to $17.6 billion in Q4’22.

Based on the data, the total outbound flow of forex (outflow) from the Nigerian economy declined by -9 percent q/q and -27 percent y/y to $9.1 billion during the quarter.

The data, taken together, imply a net forex inflow of $8.5 billion in Q4‘22.

This compares favourably with $7.0 billion and $8.3 billion in Q3‘22 and Q4’21, respectively.

The outflow of forex through the CBN decreased by -12 per cent q/q to $7.5 billion.

This accounted for 83 percent of total forex outflows in Q4’22.

The forex outflows from the CBN largely constitute payments made to service external debts and third-party transfers for government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

The combination of total forex flows (inflow and outflow) through the CBN resulted in a net outflow of $1.3 billion.

The net outflow position largely mirrors the increased demand pressure on Nigeria’s gross official reserves, which has maintained a downward trend in the past months.

Autonomous outflow of forex increased by 11 per cent q/q to $1.5 billion during the quarter.

Combined, autonomous forex flows through the economy resulted in a net inflow of $9.8 billion.

On an aggregate basis, the total forex inflow into the Nigerian economy fell by -23 per cent y/y to $73.0 billion in financial year of 2023 (FY’22), while the total forex outflow decreased by 2 per cent y/y to $41.0 billion.

This resulted in a net forex inflow of $31.4 billion in 2022.

It is significantly lower than the $52.7 billion recorded the previous year.

“We continue to advocate for effective monetary and fiscal policies toward attracting foreign direct and portfolio investments into the economy,” CBN said.

Infrastructure Financing: AfDB approves $15m loan for Nigeria

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $15 million loan for Infrastructure Credit Guarantee Company Limited (InfraCredit) to support infrastructure financing in Nigeria.

Nigerian Anchor reports that InfraCredit is a specialized Nigerian credit guarantee company that mobilises long-term capital from institutional investors, including pension funds and insurance companies, to support infrastructure projects.

According to the Bank, the subordinated loan is to strengthen InfraCredit’s capital base and help close Nigeria’s infrastructure financing gap.

The financing, which will enable InfraCredit to leverage domestic capital markets to bolster access to long-term local currency infrastructure financing in Nigeria, complements a 2019 investment into InfraCredit made by the AfDB and other partners to help unlock domestic institutional capital for infrastructure.

The loan comes at a time when InfraCredit is seeking to raise capital to finance an additional $375 million in infrastructure over the next few years, primarily by leveraging private sector financing.

“The African Development Bank is pleased to continue to support an innovative financial institution – InfraCredit – which has objectives that align closely with our priorities to mobilise institutional financing for the delivery of infrastructure for Nigeria in key sectors including transport, energy, water, agriculture and infrastructure,” the Director General of the Bank’s Nigeria Country Department, Lamin Barrow said.

The company’s green finance track record and commitments under its Clean Energy Transition Strategy and Roadmap and Green Finance Framework fits with the AfDB’s commitments to promote low-carbon development and mitigation, leveraging climate finance from private sector sources, Barrow said.

“We are delighted and very pleased with the confidence that AfDB has demonstrated in the opportunity ahead for InfraCredit to scale its development impact of unlocking domestic institutional investments for long-term local currency infrastructure finance in Nigeria that will create jobs and support local economic growth. This second round investment will strengthen our guarantee issuing capacity and bring AfDB’s total investments in InfraCredit to $25 million, which is a strong signal of commitment to the long-term growth of InfraCredit and the Nigerian economy,” InfraCredit CEO, Chinua Azubike, said.

The AfDB’s Acting Director for Financial Sector Development, Ahmed Attout, explained why AfDB made the support.

“The support demonstrates our continuing confidence in InfraCredit and recognition of the role it plays in Nigeria’s infrastructure development. The African Development Bank is committed to capacitating the various players within Africa’s capital markets and stimulating the mobilisation of long-term funding into Africa’s infrastructure,” he said.

Electricity: Buhari virtually inaugurates Kashimbila Multipurpose Dam

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, inaugurated the Kashimbila Multipurpose Dam’s 40MW Hydropower Station and Associated 132KV Switchyard, Transmission Line and Distribution Substation (Phase I) Project that is located at the Kashimbila Dam site in Taraba State.

Speaking at a virtual ceremony held at the Council Chamber, State House, Abuja, Buhari underscored the importance of the project, and highlighted the project’s role in his administration’s commitment to achieving the target of 30GW of electricity in the country by 2030, under the Electricity Vision 30:30:30.

According to Buhari, the Electricity Vision initiative aims to have renewable energy contribute at least 30 per cent to the energy mix, thereby expediting the expansion of electricity access.

He said the implementation and completion of the Kashimbila projects align with his government’s policies to alleviate poverty, generate employment opportunities, enhance healthcare services, and improve the overall standard of living of Nigerians.

“The Kashimbila Multipurpose Dam in Taraba, with storage capacity of 500million cubic metres, was conceived principally to checkmate the threat of the imminent collapse of the structurally weak and poisonous Lake Nyos,” he said.

He said that the Dam, located at the line of volcanic activities in Cameroun Republic, and its collapse could result in flooding and affecting millions of lives and properties.

Buhari maintained that the Dam was meant to serve as a buffer to contain possible discharge of water of Lake Nyos.

He said its engineering design maximized the benefits of the Kashimbila ecosystem by incorporating a 40MW Hydropower Station, 60,000 cubic metre per day Water Supply Scheme, 2,000 hectares of Irrigation System, an airstrip, fishing activities and tourism potentials.

According to the President, the Phase I of the Power Evacuation Component of the Project includes the 132KV Switchyard, four substations at Takum, Wukari, Rafin Kada, Donga, and the rehabilitation of the existing 132KV Yandev substation.

  • Foreign hardship forced 48% Nigerians back home- NBS

Foreign hardship forced 48% Nigerians back home- NBS

New National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report has revealed that hardship was responsible for the return of many Nigerians that travelled to Saudi Arabia and Benin Republic.

In a report titled, ‘Awareness and Perception of Intending and Returned Migrants on the Dangers of Irregular Migration 2022’, the NBS added deceit and crime as other factors that made most Nigerian migrants return home.

NBS stated that hardship accounted for 48.0 percent as the major reason for the return of migrants, deceit was next at 20.1 per cent and crime was the least with 1.7 percent.

The report, which surveyed a total of 2,400 households, was collated to examine the sentiments of Nigerians about the country of their destination before they left Nigeria and when they started living there.

Saudi Arabia and Benin Republic were the top destinations for migrants, while Kano and Lagos states were the preferred destinations upon the migrants’ return to Nigeria.

“Returned migrants are persons returning to their country of origin having migrated to another country other than that of their origin or citizenship (migrants whether on short-term or long-term).

These categories of people can differentiate between their earlier beliefs about their countries of destination before crossing the international borders and what they saw upon arrival.

“Figure 5.1 shows the percentage distribution of returned migrants per state. The distribution indicates that Kano State had the highest percentage of Returnees, with 39.0 percent, followed by Lagos state, with 20.7 percent.

Benue state had the least percentage of returned migrants with 3.9 percent,” the report read.

However, regardless of the hardship, about 52.4 per cent of the returned migrants from Edo state told NBS they don’t mind going back to the foreign country, while migrants in Lagos were next on the list, as 14.3 per cent shared the same sentiment with those of Edo State.

Note that they all returned to Nigeria for various reasons, while 90.9 per cent of the migrants voluntarily returned and 5.9 per cent were forced to return.

Further breakdown showed that 24.9 per cent travelled for business purposes and work accounted for 22.6 per cent.

I won Delta guber, Omo-Agege still insists

The Delta State gubernatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the just concluded general election, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has maintained that he won the March election clean and clear.

Omo-Agege, who is also the Deputy Senate President (DSP), spoke in Abuja, when he granted audience to a delegation from Ndokwa/Ukwuani led by a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mercy Almona Isei, on a thank you visit for facilitating the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Kwale community.

He said that the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was a ruse that cannot stand the test of litigation.

”I won the Delta Governorship election conducted in March this year by INEC, clean and clear.

”All the manipulations carried out by PDP (Peoples Democratic Party), in collaboration with some staff of INEC, have been exposed, and will be used as exhibits in the court of law.

”I am determined to fight it all the way because the real valid votes scored by me in the election, are more than enough to declare me as the governor-elect,” he said.

On the visitation made to him by his constituents from Ndokwa, Omo-Agege said that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, should be thanked for the feat.

He noted that he made the facilitation without any consultation or collaboration with anybody in Delta State.

”I didn’t do it in consultation with anybody. I did it all by myself. If anybody should be thanked for the University, it should be President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu,” he stated.

  • Applauding the Godwin Obla Foundation Kidney Centre in Benue

Applauding the Godwin Obla Foundation Kidney Centre in Benue

The date was January 20, 1961, and the occasion was the inauguration of the 35th President of the United States.

After taking his oath of office, the young incoming President John F. Kennedy called out to his people- “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

This call continues to resonate with every patriotic citizen with a commendable sense of “civic action and public service”.

Last April 17, 2023 was a memorable day in the ancient city of Otukpo, the traditional headquarters of the Idoma nation, Benue South Senatorial District. Long neglected by succession administrations at both federal and state levels, Otukpo town is currently enjoying some reawakening in infrastructure, following the siting of a Federal University of Health Sciences (FUHS) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Further to the flurry of amenities that are being put in place to support the effective takeoff of the university, a private individual made a humongous intervention of a magnitude never witnessed in the annals of individual philanthropic gestures in Idomaland, if not the entire Benue State.

This was the commissioning of an ultramodern Kidney/Dialysis Centre, built and equipped by the GODWIN OBLA FOUNDATION, initiated and funded by Chief Godwin Odumu Obla, SAN, in furtherance of his ceaseless philanthropic giving-back-to-the-society Program, and donated to the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo.

Some of the dialysis machines at the centre

It was a day of sober reflections, a day of long but inactive political knives, a day of nostalgic regrets, and a day of hope, as well as a day of appreciation. Indeed, it was a day of mixed emotions. Most of all, 17th April 2023 would go down as a day of realization and challenges.

The premises of the former General Hospital, where the Centre is located, is a colourful beehive of activities as people from far and near thronged the venue to appreciate Chief Godwin Odumu Obla, the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Benue South Senatorial District for his show of love towards his late wife, expressed in his determination to provide such needed health care facilities, the absence of which led to her untimely demise.

The JUDITH OGWA OBLA KIDNEY CENTRE is named after Chief Godwin Obla’s wife who passed on in the United States of America on 21st March, 2022, due to complications arising from a protracted battle with diabetes which resulted in kidney failure.

Her passing on to eternal glory was a glaring manifestation of the unacceptable gap between health facilities in Nigeria and other more advanced societies, prompting her husband to promise a well-equipped health Centre for his people back home.

For a man who has always regarded a promise to be a debt, Chief Obla pulled all available resources together and within four months the Centre became ready for handover, Project fully completed and appropriately equipped and furnished. Apart from handing over the state-of-the-art KIDNEY CENTRE to FUHSO’s Council, the Vice Chancellor of the first Federal Government-established Medical University, Prof Innocent Ujah, had a memorable 17th April 2023, as an avalanche of academic endowments totaling N40 million naira was thrust at FUHSO, still by the GODWIN OBLA FOUNDATION.

Some of these included the Judith Ogwa Obla Prize for Best Graduating Student in Nephrology; Joseph Elagbaje Obla Snr Prize (to honor his late father) for Best Graduating Student in Internal Medicine; GODWIN ODUMU OBLA Prize for Best Graduating Student in Urology; and Dr Idoko Edwin Obe Prize for Best Overall Graduating Student (in memory of the first Idoma Medical Doctor).

Each of the four endowments is to attract an annual cash gift of not less than a million naira.

The GODWIN OBLA FOUNDATION and FUHSO signed agreement papers to legitimize the handover, which also included the public presentation of the real bank cheques to Prof Innocent Ujah.

The Director General of GODWIN OBLA FOUNDATION, Elder Michael Uba Obande, JP, had, in his speech while welcoming dignitaries to the historic occasion, given a brief exposition on the FOUNDATION which is committed to upholding the biblical Good Samaritan principle of extending assistance to the needy. He told the audience that GODWIN OBLA FOUNDATION has already impacted lives positively through its Projects in such areas as the Benue Judiciary, St Francis College, Wesley High School, and New Vision Institute of Technology (all in Otukpo).

The mammoth crowd which witnessed the great event included Benue State Deputy Governor Benson Abounu, Deputy Governor-elect Sam Ode, Distinguished Senator Abba Moro, House of Reps Member Ottah Agbo, Och’Idoma V, Catholic Bishop Michael Apochi and other members of the clergy as well as members of both Obla and Ugbo families.

The Obla, the centre benefactor had advised the Vice Chancellor of the university, Innocent Ujah, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, to set up a team of eminent medical professionals based in the US to fashion out “a proper clinical governance structure.”

To ensure staff discipline, Mr. Obla said Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras would be installed at the centre to capture medical personnel activities as they relate to patients’ care.

He explained that the facility would serve as a research and training centre to assist government in planning, policy and decision-making.
