Otti announced the automatic employment while receiving the ex-Corps members led by the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mrs Gladys Adama in his office on Tuesday.

The governor directed the State Head of Service to issue them with appointment letters with immediate effect.

“On behalf of the state government, you are going to leave here with a token; but beyond the token, I hereby temporarily lift the embargo on employment to employ the nine of you, except if any of you is not interested.

“So, having lifted that embargo and having employed all of you, I also close the embargo,” the governor declared.

He directed the state’s Attorney-General to communicate to the head of service to effect the employment of the nine ex-Corps members without interviews.

“So, all you need to do is to go and do your documentation and then you can start work on Monday,” Otti stated.

Otti, who appreciated them for their outstanding performances, charged them to continue to be outstanding in everything they did.

He also thanked the State NYSC Coordinator for the great work she had done and for bringing them to him.

Mr. Chinomso Nwogu, who responded on behalf of the ex-Corps members, thanked the governor for the recognition and appointment given to them.

He promised that they would serve the state with commitment.

“We are here to sincerely express our heartfelt gratitude to you, your excellency, for the recognition.

“We also want to use this opportunity to commend your good work in the state.

“I have come with these nine who have done Abia proud, out of about a hundred and something, Abia came first with nine of them.

“They have excelled in their various places of primary assignment. As you have been told, none of them served in Abia. In fact, only one of them served in the east; others served far away in the North,” Adama said.

New academic year: Massive turnout at Abuja schools – FCTA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says FCT schools have recorded an impressive turnout of students, pupils and teachers as they resumed 2025/2026 academic session.

Some FCT Administration’s top management officials, led by the Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, said this while carrying out a routine inspection visit to schools in Abuja on Monday.

The inspection activity was carried out in primary and secondary schools within Garki Area 11, Garki Area 3, Wuye, Wuse Zone 6 and Wuse zone 3 respectively.

Hayyo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Joy Okeke, said both private and public schools in Abuja recorded an impressive turnout of students, pupils and teachers.

He said that school inspection was part of the secretariat’s ritual at the beginning of every term to monitor students’ resumption and teachers’ preparedness.

He expressed satisfaction with the resumption level .

“This shows that the school children are ready to learn, and the teachers are also ready for their teaching activities,”he said.

Hayyo urged the parents whose children and wards are yet to resume, to release them so that they can join others in learning.

“All FCT schools both private and public have resumed, I am very impressed with the situation.

“As we can see, the environment is looking well renovated. Because our Minister, Nyesom Wike’s priority is education.

“That is why he has invested billions of naira in the renovation of the schools.

“Relevant stakeholders are grateful to the Minister for renovating their schools because they are very good and conducive for learning”, he stated.

On his part, James Kuta, Director and Principal, Government Science Technical College (GSTC), Area 3, Garki-Abuja, said lessons have started as the turnout was encouraging.

Kuta said that prior to the resumption, the school management had done fumigation, levelled the grasses, cleaned the classes and hostels, for the students to begin learning.

“They are supposed to be 1,060 plus students, we have 631 on resumption. So, we have just about 400 left, and I am sure they will be back.

Similarly, Gold Iyabo, Principal of JSS, Garki, Area 11, revealed that on the first day of resumption, the school recorded attendance of 238 out of its total number of 520 students.

  • Putin gives conditions for meeting Zelensky

Putin gives conditions for meeting Zelensky

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he is willing to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but only if the meeting is adequately prepared and has the potential for meaningful outcomes.

Putin made the remarks during a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, at the conclusion of his four-day state visit to China.

The event was broadcast live on Russian state television.

“Zelensky can come to Moscow if he is ready. If there is proper preparation and a favourable outcome is possible, such a meeting will take place,” Putin said.

His comments come amid continued efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and had resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and massive displacement.

Zelensky had long called for direct talks with Putin to negotiate a ceasefire and a potential path to peace, but Russia has maintained pressure on the battlefield while offering limited diplomatic engagement.

Putin reiterated that he was opened to dialogue only if negotiations were thoroughly prepared and dismissed symbolic meetings without concrete plans or agreements in place.

He also revealed that former U.S. President Donald Trump had raised the idea of a possible meeting between the two leaders.

“Donald asked me if it was possible to organise such a meeting. I said yes, it is possible,” Putin told reporters, referencing his recent summit with Trump in Alaska a month earlier.

However, Putin again cast doubt on Zelensky’s legitimacy, claiming the Ukrainian leader’s term had expired in 2024 and questioning his authority to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine.

Zelensky continues to govern under martial law, which under the Ukrainian constitution allows the president to remain in office beyond the official term during wartime.

Putin has remained in power since 2012, after a series of constitutional amendments enabled him to extend his presidency beyond the original term limits.

  • APGA Women Leader’s son: Murder barbaric and condemnable

YPP candidate in November 8 Anambra Guber poll, Mr Paul Chukwuma has condemned the murder of Mr Martins Onyekesi, an Awka-based fish farmer by gunmen.

Chukwuma made the condemnation during a condolence visit on Mrs Esther Onyekesi, mother of late Martins, her only son on Friday in Awka.

Mrs Esther Onyekesi is the Anambra Woman Leader of APGA.

“We must all condemn this sad development; Martins Onyekesi was a young and vibrant fish farmer contributing towards the growth of the state.

“Kidnapping him from their family compound at Okpuno area of Awka about ten days ago and murdering him is an evil we must all condemn.

“This sad incident, which has sparked outrage nationwide, has brought to the fore the disturbing level of insecurity in Anambra.

“Therefore, there is the need for the Anambra government to rejig the current security architecture of the state to tackle insecurity,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo had inaugurated a security outfit, “Operation Udogachi” to complement state-owned security agencies in tackling security challenges in the state.

The governorship candidate in the company of his running mate, Mr Uzi Okagbue said that more actions were required to reduce the spat of security challenges in the state.

The late fish farmer was abducted on July 27 before the news of his sudden murder.

Inmate Misconduct: Correctional service denies pardoning officer

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has refuted a report by Sahara Reporters claiming that an officer who allegedly took an inmate out of custody for conjugal intimacy was pardoned, while the whistleblower was dismissed.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the NCoS described the report as “misleading and malicious,” aimed at tarnishing the Service’s image.

Umar clarified that the officer in question, ASC I Efe Onakpoya (Service No. 57790), was actually dismissed following a thorough disciplinary investigation.

He was found guilty of “acts unbecoming of a public officer,” particularly for taking unauthorised photographs of an inmate, Ibuchi Eze, at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Afikpo, and uploading them online.

He added that Onakpoya also made false allegations against the Service, including the claim that an inmate was taken out for a conjugal visit.

Umar stressed that the NCoS remained committed to discipline, integrity, and professionalism, and would not condone any actions that undermine its core values.

He urged the public to disregard the report and remain vigilant against attempts to discredit the Service, reaffirming NCoS’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Sallah: CAN chairman urges sacrifices for Nigeria’s security

Joseph Hayab, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Northern Chairman has urged political leaders to deepen sacrifices to ensure Nigeria’s security.

Hayab who is the association’s lead in the 19 Northern States and the FCT has urged all Nigerians in positions of authority, particularly the political leadership, “to make a double sacrifice to secure Nigeria just as Muslims offer sacrifices in obedience to God during Sallah”.

The CAN Chairman gave the advice in a Sallah message to the Muslim faithful as they join other parts of the world to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir.

“This season, which honours Prophet Ibrahim’s total obedience and willingness to sacrifice for the sake of God, is a timely call for both leaders and citizens to demonstrate renewed faith, unity, and responsibility towards our nation.

“In this spirit, Northern CAN encourages those in positions of authority, particularly the political leadership, to make a double sacrifice to secure Nigeria just as Muslims offer sacrifices in obedience to God during Sallah,” he said.

The further advised the political elite to act in consonance with their constitutional obligation and moral responsibility in the interest of every Nigerian.

“Our leaders must likewise act in obedience to their constitutional duty and moral responsibility to protect the lives and dignity of every Nigerian.

“The country is groaning under the weight of insecurity, economic distress, and social disillusionment.

“Nigerians are living in fear, and this climate of uncertainty is what gives room for enemies of peace to perpetrate evil without restraint.

“It is no longer enough to issue statements or make promises.

“The government must urgently remedy the conditions that have cast doubt on its commitment to the people.

“Let the leadership act decisively so that Nigerians will no longer have reasons to question or complain,” Hayab added.

According to him, the time has come for the Federal Government to take steps aimed at restoring public confidence and healing “our national wounds”.

“CAN calls on Nigerians to use this solemn period to pray for the peace and unity of the country, while also reaching out to the less privileged in the true spirit of Eid.

“We urge all religious and community leaders to continue fostering peaceful coexistence and to avoid making statements or taking actions capable of deepening our division.

The CAN chairman expressed warm greetings and heartfelt felicitations to the Muslim Ummah on the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, as well as a joyful and spiritually rewarding Eid-el-Kabir.

  • Pay TV Tariff: Court dismisses MultiChoice‘s suit seeking to stop FCCPC’s sanction

Pay TV Tariff: Court dismisses MultiChoice‘s suit seeking to stop FCCPC’s sanction

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited seeking to stop the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) from taking administrative action against it.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment, held that the suit was an abuse of court process having been filed after a similar suit was filed on the issue by a lawyer, Festus Onifade, with Multichoice and FCCPC as parties in the suit.

MultiChoice, the operator of DStv and Gotv had, recently, increased the subscription rates on its packages against an invitation by FCCPC to give explanation on why the company wanted to effect a price hike.

Justice Omotosho, on March 12, restrained FCCPC from sanctioning the pay-Tv company until the hearing and determination of the substance suit.

The judge gave the order after an ex-parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/379/2025 and moved by Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, to challenge FCCPC’s alleged threat.

The FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd to provide explanations regarding the March 1 price review of its packages.

The commission directed the company’s chief executive officer to appear for an investigative hearing on Feb. 27, raising concerns over frequent price hikes, potential market dominance abuse and anti-competitive practices within the pay-TV industry.

The FCCPC also issued a stern warning, stating that failure to justify the price adjustment or comply with fair market principles would lead to regulatory sanctions.

However in the ex parte motion filed by MultiChoice’s legal team led by Moyosore Onigbanjo, the company sought an order of interim injunction restraining the FCCPC and its officers from carrying out the threat against it, as communicated via a letter dated March 3, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.

It also sought an order restraining the commission and its officers from issuing any further directive or taking any steps capable of disrupting its business activities, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.

Justice Omotosho had, on March 27, fixed today for judgement after counsel for the MultiChoice, Onigbanjo and FCCPC’s lawyer, Prof. J.E.O. Abugu, SAN, adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the suit.

Delivering the judgement, the judge observed that an earlier suit filed by Onifade before the same Federal High Court in Abuja, and in which Multichoice is a party, was still pending before the company decided to file the instant suit.

The judge said Multichoice could ventilate the issues in the suit filed by Onifade simply filing a counter claim rather than filing a separate suit.

“With respect to issue two, abuse of court process refers to when a party misuses a court process for the purpose of harassing or annoying his opponent.

“It is to file multiple processes on the same issues and between the same parties,” he said, citing previous court cases.

According to the judge, the abuse lies in the multiplicity and the manner or evidence of the right of the parties rather than the exercise of the right per se.

Citing previous case, Justice Omotosho held that “the employment of judicial process is generally regarded as abuse of judicial process where a party improperly uses the issue of the judicial process to the irritation and annoyance of his opponent and the efficient administration of justice.”

The judge said MultiChoice also admitted to the existence of a similar suit In Paragraphs 7 and 8 of its further affidavit.

“Now in that suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2025 between Mr. Festus Onifade and Multichoice Nigeria Limited and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, the plaintiff there had filed a suit challenging the right of Multichoice to increase its subscription price as same is unfair.

“The plaintiff therefore sought among others a declaration that Multichoice suspends its impending price increase for being in breach of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018.

“This instant suit was filed by Multichoice challenging the powers of the defendant (FCCPC) to regulate its subscription prices.

“The origin of both suits is from a complaint by the said Mr Festus Onifade about the alleged unfair increase proposed by Multichoice Nigeria Limited.

“It is therefore clear as day that weighing both suits, especially the parties and reliefs sought, the suits are similar and can be contested in one of the suits and not in different actions,” he said.

He further held that MultiChoice was aware of the suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2025 filed by Onifade on Feb. 27, “which means it was filed before this instant suit.”

“To my mind, filing this instant suit even though the defendant in that suit is now the plaintiff is an abuse of court and an unnecessary and vexatious duplicity of actions.

“Quite dearly, these issues can be dealt with in that pending suit without the need to file a fresh surt.

“Relying on the above decisions, I therefore hold that the plaintiff in this suit could have ventilated its grievance in the other pending suit without the need to file a fresh suit.

“Allowing this suit to go on to conclusion will lead to a likely conflict of decisions arising from judgments in this court and in the other suit.

“The long and short of what this court is trying to say is that this instant suit is an abuse of court process on grounds of multiplicity of actions.

“Thus this suit must be dismissed for being an abuse of court process,” the judge ruled.

The judge then proceeded to decline jurisdiction and dismissed the suit.

However, Justice Omotosho went ahead to determine the case on the merit and held that since Nigeria runs a free market economy, the FCCPC lacked the power to interfere in the decisions of private companies to fix their prices.

The judge held that  under Section 88 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, it is only the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that can regulate prices in a regulated industry and for essential goods, not the kind of services being rendered by the Multichoice where consumers have choices.

The judge  held that the FCCPC had no business querying how companies fix their prices in a free market economy.

Ahmed Audi, the Commandant-General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has ordered the immediate detention of officers accused in the alleged N5.2 million extortion from some travelers.

This is contained in a statement by the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Babawale on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the detention follows an investigation order by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

A viral social media post alleged that some NSCDC officers extorted N5.2 million from a group of young men traveling from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti  to Akure, Ondo State.

Audi directed that the suspects should be transported to the NSCDC National headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.

He said that this will enable the corps’ disciplinary committee to carry out a full scale investigation into the alleged extortion report as directed by the minister.

”Their actions were highly condemnable and unprofessional as it contravenes the Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the NSCDC.

”The NSCDC management awaits the outcome of the investigation and promises to deal decisively with the officers according to the Public Service Rules (PSR) if found guilty of the alleged offence,” he said.
