State of emergency, Fubara’s suspension undemocratic- Obi

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers as undemocratic.

In a reaction on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi said that the action was against the rule of law, and capable of  undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi said that it was grossly unconstitutional to remove a serving governor of a state through a unilateral declaration of state of emergency.

He said that the situation was capable of  undoing the progress the country had made in the past 26 years of its democratic journey.

“The situation in Rivers does not justify such an extreme measure, it is also a biased interpretation of Section 305(1) of the 1999 constitution.

“A state of emergency does not mean that an elected governor can be removed unilaterally.

“The decision does not align with democratic norms and good governance. It appears to be a predetermined action serving specific interests rather than the collective good of Rivers people and Nigeria.

“This action constitutes an unconstitutional overreach, setting a dangerous precedent that threatens democracy, the rule of law, and the separation of powers,” he said.

Obi urged the National Assembly and all stakeholders not to allow the decision to stand in the interest of democracy and the wellbeing of Rivers people.

The China Development Bank has granted $254.76 million to Nigeria for the Kano-Kaduna railway project, ensuring construction moves forward.

The 203-kilometer standard-gauge railway will connect Kano, a major northern commercial hub, to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

This project promises safer travel, better regional connectivity, and economic growth by encouraging industrial activity along its route.

It will also create job opportunities during construction and operation phases.

Initially expected to be financed by the China Exim Bank, the project found new backing from the CDB, which is working closely with Nigeria to manage funds and operations effectively.

This railway is part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative and is being executed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

The Federal Government aims to complete this segment of the railway by year-end, alongside other ongoing rail projects across the country.

Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Nigeria to discuss stronger bilateral cooperation.

  • Sacked Ag. VC sues FUHSO, Education Minister over unlawful removal

Sacked Ag. VC sues FUHSO, Education Minister over unlawful removal

The Acting Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Professor Ediga Bede Agbo, has asked the National Industrial Court Markurdi, to declare his removal unlawful.

In the right suit, Professor Agbo insisted that the plan by the defendants to replace him jeopardizes his reputation and disrupts university governance.

Specifically, he wants an order of the Court nullifying all decisions taken as well as all acts done, at the said invalid meeting of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo held on the 29th day of November, 2024.

He, therefore, pledged to pay damages to the tune of N2,5 million, if the injunction is deemed unnecessary at the end of the trial.

Also mentioned as the defendants in the matter are the Honourable Minister of Education, the university’s Senate, and its Governing Council.

Professor Agbo, who was appointed on October 17, 2024, claims that his removal is without justification challenging an attempt to appoint Professor Stephen Obekpa Abah, a non-staff member, as the Acting Vice Chancellor.

He wants interlocutory orders of the court for recognition of appointments through a directive for the university to maintain his position as Acting Vice Chancellor, with all accompanying rights and privileges.

He also wants an order of injunction preventing the defendants from appointing Professor Abah or any other individual as the Acting Vice Chancellor pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

In an affidavit in support of his claims, deposed by him, the defendant maintained that his appointment aligns with statutory provisions as the most senior professor at FUHSO.

He challenges the validity of Professor Abah’s earlier appointment as Deputy Vice Chancellor, citing a lack of Senate approval.

He further alleges that Professor Abah, still affiliated with Ambrose Alli University and without a formal transfer to FUHSO, does not meet eligibility requirements.

In conclusion, he submitted that the university’s actions threaten to destabilize academic and administrative operations, undermining due process.

In the originating summon, the plaintiff wants the court to determine:

Whether or not having regard to relevant sections of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (Establishment) Act, 2022, the Registrar of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo can hold any valid Meeting of the Senate of the University without issuing a Notice of such a Meeting to the Claimant, who is the Acting Vice Chancellor and most Senior Professor at the University and therefore a Statutory Member of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

Whether or not the outcome of any meeting of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, convened without giving the Claimant Notice of such a meeting, is not invalid and therefore, null and void.

Upon the determination of the above questions, the Plaintiff wants the court to declare that the Claimant, being the Acting Vice-Chancellor and most senior professor at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo is a statutory member of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo and entitled to receive Notices of all Meetings of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

He also wants the court to declare that the Meeting of the Senate of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo held on the 29th day of November, 2024 is invalid and all decisions taken and all acts done, at the said invalid meeting are therefore null and void.

Ebonyi Governor Suspends Two Commissioners Over Misconduct

The two suspended commissioners are Dr. Moses Ekuma, for Health, and Francis Ori, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development

In a statement, Ebonyi Commissioner for information, Jude Okpor said the State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, took the action against the two key officials in his administration due to a reported case of gross misconduct and poor performance.

Dr. Ekuma faces a three-month suspension, while Ori’s suspension is indefinite.

Reports indicate that the suspensions stem from issues such as missing health ministry property, linked to an alleged theft by staff, and the mishandling of the Amaeze Housing Scheme by Ori.

The governor’s intervention followed an inspection on Saturday evening, where health ministry officials were found in the act of diverting state materials.

Those involved were arrested and are set for prosecution.

The Nigerian government is closely watching the legal proceedings against Simon Ekpa, the Nigerian-Finnish leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his arrest in Finland.

Ekpa was taken into custody on November 21, 2024, after Finnish authorities charged him with inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media.

The Finnish District Court of Päijät-Häme ordered his detention based on the severity of the charges, which allege that Ekpa’s online activities have fueled violence in Nigeria’s South-East region.

In a statement, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the arrest and reiterated its commitment to tracking the case as it unfolds, noting the importance of addressing the actions of transnational groups like IPOB that pose a threat to Nigeria’s security.

Previously, the Nigerian government had urged Finland to take action against Ekpa’s activities.

Pensioners Block Finance Ministry Over Delayed Payments

A scene described as embarrassing and unbecoming of a government unraveled today in Abuja as pensioners barricaded streets, especially the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance, to express their frustration over delayed pension payments.

The protest, spearheaded by the National Union of Contributory Pensioners, focused on unpaid accrued rights—benefits earned under the old pension scheme before the 2004 transition to the Contributory Pension Scheme.

These entitlements are meant to be transferred to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) to allow retirees access upon retirement.

However, some pensioners who retired as far back as 2003 claim they have yet to receive their due, leaving them unable to secure funds through the Pension Administration System.

The pensioners are calling on the federal government to resolve the backlog swiftly.

  • New Minister Targets APC Victory in Kano 2027

New Minister Targets APC Victory in Kano 2027

Yusuf Ata, the newly appointed junior Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has set his sights on reclaiming Kano State for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

During his maiden visit to Kano following his swearing-in, Ata emphasized his political mission to strengthen the party’s position in the state, particularly in Kano Central, his home base.

Ata’s appointment follows a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu, which saw the dismissal of Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, the former Minister of State for Housing.

Gwarzo has since criticized the decision, suggesting that Nasiru Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, would have been a better choice for the role to bolster the party’s influence in Kano Central.

Despite the controversy, Ata has vowed to balance his ministerial duties with frequent visits to Kano to spearhead APC’s efforts in regaining control of the state.

Gwarzo, meanwhile, has pledged continued support for the President’s administration, stating that his removal was politically motivated rather than performance-related.
