Nigerian troops dismantle IPOB camps, arrest 9 suspects in Anambra

In a joint operation with Vigilante Groups, the Nigerian Army successfully destroyed camps belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Anambra.

The operation, carried out by troops of the 302 Regiment under the 82 Division, targeted the communities of Oroma and Umuewelum Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the operation in a statement released in Abuja on Monday.

The raid aimed to curb the illicit activities of the fighters in the region and ensure peace and security in the South East of Nigeria.

During the operation, the troops seized significant items, including one AK-47 Rifle, one AKMS Rifle, three Lexus SUVs, and two Motorcycles. Additionally, eight suspects were arrested for their involvement in the unlawful activities.

In a separate operation, the troops also conducted a raid at an IPOB camp in Mmiata Anam, Anambra South.

During the encounter, one IPOB fighter was neutralized, while another was apprehended alive. The troops recovered one AK-47 Rifle, one dane gun, and police uniforms from the camp.

The successful raids represent the continued efforts of the Nigerian security forces to address the challenges posed by the proscribed groups in the region and maintain law and order.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to enjoin all law-abiding citizens and particularly the good and enterprising people of the South East to continue to support and cooperate with the troops and other security agencies in their effort to end the menace bedeviling the region,” he said.

  • For obeying IPOB’s sit-at-home order, Enugu Govt seals 106 shops, 2 banks

For obeying IPOB’s sit-at-home order, Enugu Govt seals 106 shops, 2 banks

The Enugu State Government on Monday sealed 106 shops and two banks for observing Monday’s sit-at-home order by a faction of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The exercise was carried out by officials of the State Government and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

Governor Peter Mbah had last Monday threatened to sanction shop owners and banks that refused to open for business in compliance with the illegal sit-at-home order.

Mbah issued the threat while monitoring the situation in major markets in Enugu, the capital city.

According to him, traders who continued to obey the order up until July 24, stood to lose their shops to serious-minded businessmen.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who led the exercise, said the action was in line with the governor’s warning.

Onyia said the governor’s intention was not to punish businesses but encourage and inculcate the spirit of ‘no sit-at-home in traders.

“It is not a punitive but ownership culture, where all of us come together to fight the menace of illegal sit-at-home in the state.

“We are taking it up, not because Mbah is in the business of stopping economic growth but to fight those that think they can intimidate us,” he said.

Onyia further said that the task force created by the State Government would be in the markets next Monday to continue to monitor the situation.

“We have been to ShopRite, Celebrity – a shopping mall – SPAR and others, we saw shops that were not opened and we sealed them.

“That is why ECTDA is here and the owners should go through a process to get them reopened,” he said.

He said that 85 per cent of traders showed up in the markets visited.

The SSG said that the governor had made a commitment by providing security and buses at specific places to convey workers to the state Secretariat.

He said the measure became necessary because the state was tired of losing significant revenue by working for only four days a week.

On why he unsealed Easter Shop earlier, Onyia said the management of the mall gave an assurance to open every Monday.

Speaking with newsmen at the end of the exercise, the Head of ECTDA, Mr Gideon Onyia, said that the affected shops were both corporate and privately owned.

He said that 78 shops were sealed at the Ogbete Market, plus two new generation banks, five shops at SPAR and 24 shops at the Old Artisan Market.

“So if you failed to obey our rules and directives, we can revoke them or withdraw your approvals and give them to people who are eager to do business in the state.

“Those whose shops are sealed, we will tell them the penalty but the governor was magnanimous for saying that the exercise was not punitive,” Onyia said.

#EndSARS: Lagos Govt dismisses allegations of mass burial

The Lagos State Government has dismissed allegations that it held a mass burial for 103 victims of the Lekki Tollgate #EndSARS protest.

This is contained in a statement issued by Dr Olusegun Ogboye, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health in Lagos at the weekend.

Ogbonge said that peddlers of the news were deliberately misinterpreting and sensationalizing a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency (PPA), to misinform the public, stir public sentiment and cause public disaffection against the Lagos State Government.

He said that the title of the letter was: Letter of No Objection – Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 EndSARS victims.

According to him, while the government will not have dignified the mischievous elements peddling such news with a response, it consider it appropriate to set the records straight.

He said that there was the need to draw the attention of well-meaning citizens to the antics of some unscrupulous elements who are hell bent on disrupting the peace and tranquility of Lagos with distorted news and half-truth about the PPA letter.

”It is public knowledge that the year 2020 #EndSARS crisis that snowballed into violence in many parts of Lagos recorded casualties in different areas of the state and NOT from the Lekki Toll Gate, as being inferred in the mischievous publications.

”For the records, the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu; Ikorodu; Orile; Ajegunle; Abule-Egba; Ikeja; Ojota; Ekoro; Ogba; Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State, including a jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison.

”The 103 casualties mentioned in the document were from these incidents and NOT from Lekki Toll-gate, as being alleged. For the avoidance of doubt, nobody was retrieved from the Lekki Toll Gate incident.

”In the aftermath of the #EndSARS violence, the office of the Chief Coroner invited members of the public, through public adverts and announcement, who had lost loved ones or whose relatives had been declared missing between Oct. 19 and Oct. 27, 2020 from various clashes as mentioned above, to contact the department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to help with identification of these casualties deposited in state-owned morgues.

”Relatives are to undergo DNA tests for identification purposes. It is important to state categorically that nobody responded to claim any of the bodies.

”However, after almost three years, the bodies remained unclaimed, adding to the congestion of the morgues.

”This spurred the need to decongest the morgues – a procedure that follows very careful medical and legal guidelines in the event that a relative may still turn up to claim a lost relative years after the incident,” Ogboye said.

He said that decongestion of the public morgues was a periodic and regular exercise approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, to free up space in mortuaries that have a large number of unclaimed bodies.
