Senate Launches Probe as as Nigeria’s Rail Services Plummet

The Senate has launched an investigation into Nigeria’s railway contracts and project execution following a sharp decline in services across key routes.

Lawmakers expressed alarm that major lines such as the Kano–Kaduna corridor now operate just one passenger trip per day, while cargo delays have nearly doubled.

During plenary, senators cited persistent bandit attacks, poor maintenance, and aging infrastructure as major setbacks undermining the rail sector’s revival.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed relevant committees to conduct a comprehensive review of all ongoing and completed rail projects, focusing on their design, funding, execution, and maintenance records.

The probe, lawmakers said, seeks to determine why Nigeria’s railway system, once seen as the backbone of national transport, is now struggling to meet basic operational standards.

CDS Assures Nigerian Troops of Improved Salaries, Welfare in 2026

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has assured officers and personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria that concrete steps are being taken to improve their salaries and overall welfare.

Oluyede gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Social Night for soldiers, ratings, airmen and airwomen.

He said the initiative was being pursued in collaboration with the Service Chiefs and with the approval of President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“If I tell you we are working on something, please be hopeful. Something positive will come up,” the CDS said, pledging that 2026 would be a better year for personnel of the armed forces.

Beyond salary enhancement, Oluyede disclosed that arrangements were being finalised to improve post-service welfare, particularly through access to soft loans for spouses and affordable housing schemes for serving and retired personnel.

According to him, discussions are ongoing with financial institutions to provide low-interest loans to spouses of service members to enable them establish sustainable businesses, while housing loan options are being expanded to ensure personnel retire with dignity.

The defence chief commended soldiers, ratings, airmen and airwomen for their resilience and professionalism in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty across all theatres of operation, noting that their sacrifices had continued to yield significant operational successes nationwide.

He also paid tribute to fallen heroes and acknowledged the vital role of military families, describing their prayers and sacrifices as a silent but powerful force behind every successful mission.

Oluyede expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support for the Armed Forces, as well as to the Service Chiefs for their leadership and commitment to improving the welfare and morale of personnel.

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Administration (CDA), Rear Adm. Gideon Kachim, described the Social Night as a deliberate gathering designed to give personnel an opportunity to unwind, reflect and celebrate.

Kachim said the occasion also provided a solemn moment to honour and remember fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation, stressing that their sacrifices remained a timeless source of inspiration to serving personnel.

The Social Night was part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas; Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of awards to deserving personnel for outstanding performance and dedication to duty, as well as musical performances by legendary artistes Tuface Idibia, Zule Zoo and Magnito

APC Denies Rumours of Abdullahi Adamu’s Defection to ADC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that a former National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The denial was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Lafia by Hassan Abubakar, the party’s State Organising Secretary and Coordinator of the APC e-membership registration exercise.

Abubakar described the reports as baseless propaganda deliberately designed to mislead the public and create confusion within the party.

According to the statement, Senator Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, remains a committed and card-carrying member of the APC.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has at no time defected, contemplated defection, or associated himself with any other political party,” the statement said.

Abubakar explained that the photograph being circulated online as evidence of the alleged defection was taken during the ongoing APC e-membership registration and revalidation exercise — a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening the party’s database and internal democracy.

He noted that the image clearly showed Senator Adamu revalidating his APC membership in line with the party’s constitutional processes and reform agenda.

The APC described the attempt by unnamed individuals to misrepresent a legitimate party activity as a defection as irresponsible and politically desperate, adding that it amounted to deliberate misinformation.

The statement further stressed that Senator Adamu’s loyalty to the APC, as well as his contributions to the party’s growth and stability, remained well documented and unquestionable.

The party urged its members, the media, and the general public to disregard the claims and rely only on verified information from credible sources.

It reaffirmed that the APC in Nasarawa State and across the country remains united and focused on advancing progressive governance.

Nigerian Army Foils Bandits in Kogi: 3 Neutralised, Supplier Arrested

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade, Lokoja, have successfully disrupted bandit activities in Kogi State, neutralising three suspected bandits and arresting one suspected logistics supplier, in a series of coordinated operations over the weekend.

The operations, disclosed by the Brigade’s spokesperson, Lt. Hassan Abdullahi, occurred on Saturday, January 3, as part of ongoing efforts to curb banditry and kidnapping across the state.

According to Lt. Abdullahi, the military conducted targeted patrols and ambushes in Kabba Bunu and Yagba West Local Government Areas, acting on credible intelligence about suspected bandits moving from the Adankolo general area.

In one engagement, troops ambushed a group of bandits heading toward Agbadu Bunu. The encounter resulted in two bandits being neutralised, while troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, ammunition, and a locally fabricated firearm.

Lt. Abdullahi noted that the ambush forced the bandits to withdraw, leaving behind blood stains at the scene, indicating casualties.

In a separate operation in Yagba West, troops, in collaboration with local vigilantes, confronted another bandit group around Saminaka village.

One bandit was neutralised during the engagement, and another AK-47 rifle with ammunition was recovered.

The operation also led to the arrest of a suspected bandit logistics supplier, identified as Sunday Adedotun.

Items recovered from his settlement included energy drinks, soft drinks, bottled water, and harvested farm produce, believed to be intended to supply bandits in the area.

The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing investigation.

Lt. Abdullahi emphasised that these operations reflect the Nigerian Army’s sustained pressure on criminal elements and their support networks, aiming to deny them freedom of movement and operational space within the state.

He added that the troops’ actions underscore professionalism, discipline, and rapid response to actionable intelligence.

Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Kasim Sidi commended the troops for their courage and diligence, reiterating the Brigade’s commitment to aggressive patrols and operations aimed at securing communities and protecting lives and property in Kogi State.

  • PDP Crisis: Warring Factions Assure Nigerians Party Remains on Course After INEC Meeting

PDP Crisis: Warring Factions Assure Nigerians Party Remains on Course After INEC Meeting

The two warring factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reassured Nigerians that the party remains united in purpose and committed to its role as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, despite its lingering leadership crisis.

The assurances were given on Friday by the PDP National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, and the embattled National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, following a crucial meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

PDP Leadership Crisis: INEC Steps In

Speaking separately with journalists after the meeting, Turaki said the engagement was convened at the invitation of INEC to address the prolonged internal dispute rocking the party’s national leadership.

“We want to assure Nigerians and indeed our party members that we are on course. We shall continue to remain on course by the special grace of God,” Turaki said.

He disclosed that the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership honoured the invitation but expressed surprise that some individuals who had been expelled from the PDP were also invited by the electoral body.

According to him, both factions presented their positions to INEC.

“We have spoken from our own perspective. We have made presentations on the issues, and INEC has listened to us,” he stated.

INEC Cannot Act as a Court — Turaki

Turaki explained that INEC acknowledged that several issues surrounding the PDP leadership crisis were already before the Court of Appeal, while others were yet to be heard.

He said the commission made it clear that it could not assume the role of a court of law but promised to carefully review the submissions made by both factions and communicate its decision in due course.

While awaiting INEC’s response, Turaki insisted that the PDP under his leadership would continue to function fully.

“The PDP will continue to hold the government accountable, uphold the rule of law, promote best democratic practices, and address the challenges facing Nigerians,” he said.

    INEC’s Recognition Question

When asked which PDP leadership INEC recognised, Turaki said the commission’s primary objective was to find a sustainable path forward for the party.

He commended INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, and his team for giving both factions a fair hearing.

“I think what INEC has done, in the spirit of reconciliation, is proper. If only one side was invited, it would have been like talking to ourselves,” he said.

    Elections and Democracy at Stake

Turaki warned that excluding a major opposition party like the PDP from elections would undermine Nigeria’s democratic credibility, especially in upcoming polls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ekiti, and Osun States.

“Conducting an election that a major opposition party will not participate in will cast a dark shadow on the process,” he warned.

He also urged INEC to adopt similar conflict-resolution approaches for other political parties experiencing internal crises.

    Anyanwu: Court Disqualified Turaki-Led Executive

On his part, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, who leads the faction backed by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, said the PDP would emerge stronger from the crisis.

“The PDP is still PDP. Nigerians know that PDP has mechanisms for managing internal crises. We will come out stronger,” Anyanwu said.

He claimed that a court ruling had invalidated the convention that produced the Turaki-led executive.

However, he praised INEC for demonstrating a genuine commitment to preserving the PDP as Nigeria’s main opposition party.

    Call for Reconciliation

Anyanwu said the meeting allowed both factions to highlight the root causes of the crisis, which he attributed to “greed, ambition, and ego.”

He reaffirmed the faction’s commitment to the rule of law, INEC guidelines, and the PDP Constitution, and urged aggrieved party members to return to the National Caretaker Committee for reconciliation.

Earlier, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan explained that the meeting became necessary due to conflicting communications received from both PDP factions, which threatened the party’s operational clarity ahead of elections.

  • NNPP Re-elects Ahmed Ajuji as Chairman, Signals Major Push for 2027 Elections

NNPP Re-elects Ahmed Ajuji as Chairman, Signals Major Push for 2027 Elections

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has re-elected Dr. Ahmed Ajuji as its National Chairman, a move party leaders say signals a renewed push to expand the party’s influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ajuji was returned unopposed through a voice vote at the party’s National Convention held on Saturday in Abuja. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present to monitor the exercise.

The convention also saw the re-election of Dipo Olayoku as National Secretary, alongside other members of the party’s national leadership, all of whom emerged unopposed and were later affirmed by delegates.

Speaking after his re-election, Ajuji thanked party members for the confidence reposed in the leadership and pledged that the NNPP would intensify efforts to strengthen its structures nationwide.

He said the new leadership accepted the responsibility of steering the affairs of the party over the next four years, describing the moment as critical to the NNPP’s future.

“Our task is clear. We must work harder, remain united and position this party to win the trust of Nigerians ahead of 2027,” Ajuji said.

He urged national officers to treat their re-election as a call to service and to uphold the oath of office administered to them.

“Our Flag Must Fly Higher” — Ajuji

Earlier in his welcome address, Ajuji called on NNPP members across the country to remain hopeful and committed to the party’s vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.

He said the NNPP was determined to build a strong, progressive and inclusive nation, stressing that the party had been repositioned to play a leading role in Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Our flag must fly higher across all parts of Nigeria. Nigerians want reassurance that a better country is possible, and NNPP is ready to provide that hope,” he said.

According to him, the party’s restructuring and internal reforms have strengthened its readiness to compete nationally.

“All eyes are on NNPP to show the way forward for sustainable democracy and development. Nigerians deserve a fresh start and a new deal,” Ajuji added.

Kwankwaso, Abba Yusuf Back New Leadership

The National Leader of the NNPP and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, congratulated the re-elected national executives and urged them to remain disciplined and loyal to the party.

Kwankwaso said the performance of the NNPP-led government in Kano State offered a clear picture of what Nigerians could expect if the party is elected into power in 2027.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the convention as a defining moment for the party, saying it reflected the NNPP’s growing national relevance.

He urged the new leaders to promote unity, fairness and inclusivity within the party.

“Let this convention mark a new beginning where no one is left behind,” Yusuf said.

NNPP Dismisses Rumours of Internal Crisis

Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee, Bala Mohammed, said the NNPP had recorded notable achievements in the past four years, strengthening its place in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He explained that the convention was held to ratify key decisions of the National Executive Committee and formally elect national officers.

“This gathering is also about reinforcing the unity and brotherhood that define us as a political family,” Mohammed said.

The party’s National Adviser, Magaji Ibrahim, dismissed claims of division within the NNPP, insisting the party remained united under Kwankwaso’s leadership.

“I can assure Nigerians that nothing will divide this party. We are solid and focused as we move toward 2027,” Ibrahim said.

A major highlight of the convention was the ratification of the suspension of Article 37(1) of the NNPP Constitution (2024 as amended).

Tinubu Presents 2026 Budget, Projects ₦34.33tr Revenue, ₦58.18tr Spending

    By Caroline Ameh

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint sitting of the National Assembly, pledging stricter discipline in budget execution, stronger accountability and enhanced monitoring of public spending in the new fiscal year.

The budget, titled “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” seeks to entrench recent economic reforms, stabilise macroeconomic conditions and convert recovery gains into sustained, inclusive growth.

Addressing lawmakers, the President said he had directed key fiscal authorities—including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Director-General of the Budget Office—to enforce strict adherence to the approved budget framework and implementation timelines.

“2026 will mark a turning point in budget execution. We will demand accountability, rigorous monitoring and reporting that translate policy into measurable outcomes for Nigerians,” Tinubu said.

The President said the budget was formulated against a backdrop of emerging macroeconomic stability, following what he described as difficult but necessary policy adjustments implemented by his administration.

He reported that Nigeria’s economy expanded by 3.98 per cent in the third quarter of 2025, up from 3.86 per cent in the corresponding period of 2024, while inflation declined for eight consecutive months to 14.45 per cent in November 2025, from 24.23 per cent in March.

Tinubu further cited improved crude oil output, stronger non-oil revenue mobilisation driven by tax administration reforms, rising investor confidence and external reserves estimated at $47 billion, sufficient to cover more than 10 months of imports.

“These results reflect deliberate policy choices. The task before us is to consolidate these gains so that stability evolves into prosperity and prosperity is broadly shared,” he said.

Reviewing the performance of the 2025 budget, the President said the government realised ₦18.6 trillion in revenue and ₦24.66 trillion in expenditure by the third quarter, representing 61 per cent and 60 per cent of their respective annual targets.

He attributed delays in capital releases partly to the extension of the 2024 capital budget into 2025, noting that the experience highlighted the need for firmer fiscal discipline in the 2026 budget cycle.

For 2026, the President projected total revenue of ₦34.33 trillion and total expenditure of ₦58.18 trillion, including ₦15.52 trillion earmarked for debt servicing.

Recurrent non-debt expenditure is estimated at ₦15.25 trillion, while capital expenditure is projected at ₦26.08 trillion. The resulting budget deficit of ₦23.85 trillion, he said, represents 4.28 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Underlying the projections are assumptions of a crude oil price benchmark of $64.85 per barrel, daily production of 1.84 million barrels, and an exchange rate of ₦1,400 to the US dollar.

The budget prioritises national security, infrastructure development and human capital investment, with proposed allocations of ₦5.41 trillion for defence and security, ₦3.56 trillion for infrastructure, ₦3.52 trillion for education and ₦2.48 trillion for health.

Tinubu said security spending would be outcome-based, aligned with the implementation of a new national counter-terrorism doctrine and expanded intelligence-led operations.

On education, he referenced the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which has supported more than 418,000 students across 229 tertiary institutions, while noting that healthcare expenditure represents six per cent of total budgetary spending, net of liabilities.

The President warned government-owned enterprises to meet their revenue remittance obligations, announcing plans to deploy digitised revenue collection systems to curb leakages and strengthen fiscal transparency.

“A budget’s true value lies not in its announcement, but in its execution,” Tinubu said, pledging prudent expenditure management, enhanced revenue mobilisation and tighter oversight.

He urged the National Assembly to support the proposals, expressing confidence that effective executive-legislative collaboration would ensure successful implementation.

The President subsequently laid the 2026 Appropriation Bill before the National Assembly for legislative consideration.

PDP Lagos Chapter Defends Adeleke’s Exit Amid Party Crisis

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defended Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision to leave the party ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.

Briefing newsmen on Tuesday, Mr. Hakeem Olalemi, PDP Vice Chairman, Lagos Central, said Adeleke acted wisely given the party’s ongoing leadership crises and internal instability.

Olalemi noted that despite the recent election of new PDP national executives at the November convention in Ibadan, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) still recognizes former officials Amb. Umar Damagum and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, creating uncertainty over who would sign Adeleke’s 2026 nomination forms if he stayed.

“No governor would risk his mandate on a platform battling legitimacy issues,” Olalemi said, stressing that Adeleke’s decision was one of self-preservation, not disloyalty.

He added that internal conflicts have made the PDP unsafe for any serious candidate, accusing some influential governors of exacerbating the crisis for personal reasons.

Olalemi urged the party’s founding fathers to intervene and restore peace, warning that unresolved disputes could threaten the PDP’s survival.

Adeleke officially announced his resignation on Monday, notifying the party through a letter sent to Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, Ede, on November 4. He has not yet revealed his next political move.

Senate Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Probes Kebbi Troop Pullout

    By Caroline Ameh | Abuja

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity in parts of Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States, resolving to probe the alleged withdrawal of military personnel from a Kebbi school hours before a major abduction.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Lola Ashiru, who described the escalating attacks on schools, worship centres, and rural communities as a national emergency requiring immediate federal action.

    Senators Decry Widening Attacks

Lawmakers lamented the November 18 attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, where gunmen killed two worshippers and abducted 38 others, all later rescued in coordinated security operations.

They noted that the attack led to the temporary closure of schools in five local government areas across Kwara, as well as parts of Niger and Kebbi States, affecting 47 Federal Unity Colleges nationwide.

The Senate also condemned the growing pattern of school kidnappings, including recent abductions in Niger and Kebbi States, warning that educational and religious institutions had become increasingly vulnerable to banditry and terrorism.

    Controversy Over Troop Withdrawal

Lawmakers were particularly alarmed by credible reports that military personnel were withdrawn from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, just hours before the abduction of 24 female students.
They demanded a transparent investigation into the decision and those responsible.

Contributing to the debate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) urged his colleagues to confront insecurity “head-on and without reference to the past.”

He insisted that the Senate must uncover who authorised the withdrawal of troops from the school before the attack.

Abaribe’s position was strongly supported by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senator Seriake Dickson, and other lawmakers, who called for urgent and coordinated security action.

    Intelligence Points to Internal Sabotage

The motion also cited intelligence reports indicating that internal collaborators continue to aid criminal networks with logistics, information, and escape routes.

Senators warned that terrorists were exploiting forest corridors such as the Kwara–Kogi axis, Kebbi–Zamfara stretch, and Niger’s Shiroro–Rafi–Munya belt to carry out attacks and evade arrest.

They further raised concern over the deplorable state of the Idofian–Omu-Aran–Eruku–Egbe–Kabba highway, which they said provides bandits with ambush points, easy escape routes, and concealment within thick forests.

    Tinubu Commended for Swift Response

Earlier, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele cautioned against rising public speculation over the release of kidnap victims, urging a review of the performance of Senate security committees.
He reaffirmed that the Tinubu administration does not and will not support ransom payments to abductors.

The Senate commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as his “swift and personal intervention,” including cancelling planned foreign trips to coordinate national security efforts.

It also lauded security agencies for the rescue of 38 abductees in Kwara and 51 students in Niger State.

    Key Resolutions

    The Senate resolved to:

    • Urge communities in Kwara, Kebbi, Niger, and across the country to remain vigilant and expose collaborators aiding criminal groups.
    • Commend President Tinubu and security agencies for swift interventions while calling for sustained rescue operations until all abductees are freed.
    • Mandate the immediate reconstruction of the Idofian–Omu-Aran–Eruku–Egbe–Kabba highway to curb ambushes and improve mobility for security forces.
    • Direct the Army, Police, DSS, and Defence Intelligence Bureau to intensify intelligence-driven operations, forest combing, and cross-state collaboration.
    • Establish a Joint Task Force (JTF) along the Kwara–Kogi corridor with forward operating bases in Eruku, Babanla, Oke-Ero, and Isanlu.
    • Instruct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and NEMA to provide relief materials to affected families where schools remain closed.
    • Launch a 14-day Senate investigation into the surge in insecurity, including the alleged role of internal collaborators.
    • Strengthen local vigilante networks and review Nigeria’s firearms laws in line with global best practices.
    • Conduct a separate probe into the troop withdrawal from the Kebbi school before the abduction.
    • Pursue diplomatic engagement with the U.S. and allied nations to improve intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism support.
    • Observe a two-minute silence in honour of all victims of recent attacks.
