Cost of living crisis: Northern Youths to join October 1st protest

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced plans to mobilize Nigerians for a peaceful protest on October 1st, 2024.

The group, through its Director of Public Communications, Hussaini Shuaibu, made this declaration in a statement released in Kaduna on Monday.

According to Shuaibu, the protest aims to hold the government accountable for the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation, particularly in northern Nigeria, where the impact has been most severe.

He stressed that the protest is grounded in the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens, citing sections 38 to 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees free association, the expression of views, and the right to peaceful mobilization.

Shuaibu said despite the government’s promise to address the concerns raised by protesters during the August 2024 demonstrations, the issues remain unresolved and have worsened in some cases two months later.

“The government promised to address the issues raised during the protests, but instead of progress, the situation has worsened,” Shuaibu said.

He added that the NYCN feels compelled to act, particularly because northern Nigeria has been the hardest hit by these economic and political crises.

“As such, we are mobilising and sensitising the people to come out and continue to protest peacefully, the unbearable hardship until the government agrees to act responsibly and respond to the issues promptly and decisively,” Shuaibu said.

The Independence Day protest, according to the NYCN, is not just a symbolic action but a necessary step to “prick the conscience” of Nigerian leaders.

“Since the government seems overwhelmed by these responsibilities, it is our duty to ensure we have a better Nigeria that we all can be proud of,” Shuaibu concluded.

This decision follows an earlier invitation extended to the press to report on the proceedings.

The Joint Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Services of the House of Representatives has officially informed the House press corps that reporting on the investigation into serious corruption claims involving the EFCC and NCS in the Bobrisky case is prohibited.

  • The fear of anarchy heightens as Obaseki moves to stall Philip

The fear of anarchy heightens as Obaseki moves to stall Philip

The likelihood of breakdown of order heightens following reports that Philip Shaibu is plotting to resume office as Deputy Governor.

The Edo House of Assembly had impeached Shaibu at the height of his rift with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

However, he challenged the impeachment in court, saying the lawmakers did not give him fair hearing.

A Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice J. K. Omotosho had annulled the impeachment and ordered reinstatement of Shaibu, but the government failed to comply with the order, saying it had filed a stay of execution.

When the Government House area was visited, on Monday morning, visitors and civil servants were seen trekking long distances to their destinations after parking their vehicles by the road side

Also, it was observed that only security vehicles had unhindered access to Osadebe Avenue.

A civil servant who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said they were surprised to see heavy security in and around the government.

Recall that on Sunday, Crusoe Osagie, spokesman to Obaseki, had in a statement alleged that Shaibu had perfected plans to invade the Government House to enforce his “purported” reinstatement despite the fact that a stay of execution appeal had been filed.

Osagie had called on the Inspector General of Police and well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on Shaibu to refrain from his “devious plot as it is a clear recipe for chaos”.

“We want to draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police to the intelligence we have gathered regarding a planned move by Shaibu to forcefully enter the Edo State Government House to purportedly enforce the ruling of Justice J. K. Omotosho.”

“The stay of execution is still pending at the court of appeal and we appeal to the Inspector General of Police to ensure that 0 state does not descend to anarchy because of the ambition of one man. The last time Shaibu attempted to do this, it led to the death of a police officer. We believe that is one death too many and it is only wise for us to prevent a repeat of such,” he said.

Responding, Shaibu’s spokesperson, Mr.Ebomhiana Musa, denied the allegation, saying the reality is yet to dawn on Obaseki that they had been rejected by Edo people.

“We want to put it clearly here that, unlike Governor Godwin Obaseki, Philip Shaibu is a peace loving man, who firmly believes in the rule of law and would not want to shed innocent blood for whatever reason.

“As it is today, in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of the good people of Edo State and Nigerians, Philip Shaibu is the de jure and de facto Deputy Governor of Edo State. We need not fight or struggle for that which God has given us”, he said.

FG Launches Training to Curb High Mortality Rate Among Retirees

In an effort to address the increasing death rate among retirees, the Federal Government has initiated a training program designed to promote self-reliance among retiring officers.

The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Ibrahim Dasuki-Arabi, shared this development during a training event in Gombe for retiring officers in the North-East region.

This five-day training program, which aims to equip retirees with essential skills, was introduced after it was observed that many retirees face challenges after leaving public service.

According to Dasuki-Arabi, the government seeks to help retirees remain productive by teaching them skills they can use after retirement.

Although the initial plan was to train 10,000 retirees, limited funding has restricted the current phase to 600 participants.

The government is hopeful that positive results from this initiative will lead to the approval of more resources for future training sessions.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to ensure that retirees can continue contributing to society, with follow-up evaluations planned to assess the impact of the training after a year.

At the event, some retirees expressed their appreciation for the program. Janet Ali-Kumo, a recently retired Chief Nursing Officer, suggested that capable retirees be given contract opportunities.

Tony Amaefule, a former Chief Lecturer, shared his experiences, emphasizing the importance of early financial planning for retirement.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, over allegations of N27 billion fraud.

Top sources within the commission confirmed that the former governor was arrested on Friday and was still in the anti-graft agency’s detention as of Friday evening.

One of the sources revealed that at least 15-count charges had been filed against Ishaku and he would be arraigned in court soon as evidence against him had been compiled.

Ishaku is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and served as the governor of Taraba State from May 2015 to May 2023.

In May 2021, the anti-graft agency also arrested three officials who served under his government for allegedly involved in a N21 billion scam.

It was learnt that the state officials were a permanent secretary, a Director of Finance and Account and a cashier in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

It was gathered further that alleged stolen public funds under the Ishaku government were withdrawn from the state’s accounts through cheques in tranches of at least N10 million each.

EFCC Raids Private Hostels In Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto

    …Arrests Multiple Students

Close to 24 hours after its operatives raided private hostels at the Usmanu Danfodio University last Friday night and arresting scores of students, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is yet to give reasons for the action.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the raid occurred in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro communities in Sokoto, with dozens of students picked up by the EFCC operatives. Students recounted that the officials stormed their hostels around 4 am, indiscriminately arresting several students.

“It was like a scene from a movie,” said a student who wished to remain anonymous. “We thought they were kidnappers at first, but then we saw the EFCC logo on their vests.”

The students claimed that the EFCC operatives did not provide any explanation for the arrests or produce any warrants.

“This is unacceptable,” said another student. “We demand answers from the EFCC. What were they looking for? Why did they arrest our colleagues?”

This incident bears a striking resemblance to a similar event in February, where EFCC officials raided hostels outside the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) campus, arresting several students. In that incident, students reported that their properties were destroyed, and many were assaulted and brutalized, including female students.

  • Travel agents withdraw from 2025 hajj over refund dispute

Travel agents withdraw from 2025 hajj over refund dispute

The crisis brewing at the National Hajj Commission seems not to have an end in sight as travel agents under the aegis of the Association for Hajj and Umrah Operators of Nigeria pull out of the arrangement as well as registration for the 2025 operations.
This was made known through an internal memo obtained by our correspondent on Thursday.
AHUON and the National Hajj Commission have been at war over issues bordering on the seizure of funds belonging to the practitioners by NAHCON as well as other pockets of alleged misdeeds on the part of the commission.
It will be recalled that a financial crisis and inhuman treatment of Nigerians at the last hajj consumed the ousted Chairman of NAHCON, Jalal Arabi, who was replaced by Prof. Abdullahi Usman.
In the latest memo from AHUON, the president directed that members should halt any process regarding the 2025 hajj operations.
The statement read partly, “Members who have made payment for the 2025 hajj form should not submit it until a counter directive is given. Members who have collected the form submitted it and made payment should send the name of their company to the zonal VP.
“The NEC has met with our BOT members, and we all agreed that this action is necessary to ensure that all our requests before NAHCON are duly met, especially our accumulated refunds over the years.
“It is worthy of note that NAHCON responded to our several letters of request only on Tuesday, 24th September 2024, giving an excuse that hajj processing should not be delayed to align with the Saudi Hajj calendar. This, to us, is their usual tactic over the years about the issues of accumulated refunds with them and can no longer be tolerated.”
The National Spokesperson for the association, Monsurat Akinbode-Ajayi, confirmed the decision to our correspondent on Friday.
“Yes, the national leadership has directed members to halt all plans on the 2025 hajj operations; it is true, I can confirm that to you,” she said.
Contacted, the Acting Director of Public Affairs for NAHCON, Fatima Usara, acknowledged the issues at hand but stated that the commission was in touch with the association.
She noted that the issues at hand involved multiple stakeholders both in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.
In a short piece sent to our correspondent through WhatsApp with the title, ‘NAHCON to AHUON: Do not derail hajj preparations’, Usara reassured AHOUN and the general public that the commission had no intention of downplaying or neglecting the issue of refunds.
She said, “The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has noted with concern the recent directive by the Association for Hajj and Umrah Operators in Nigeria instructing their members to suspend participation in 2025 hajj preparations.
“While we acknowledge the issues raised regarding accumulated refunds, it is important to clarify that NAHCON has been in continuous communication with AHOUN on this matter and remains committed to addressing all legitimate concerns. The delay in resolving certain financial issues stems from the complexities of hajj operations, which involve multiple stakeholders both locally and internationally, including Saudi authorities.
“On 24th September 2024, NAHCON communicated with AHOUN regarding the urgency of aligning with the Saudi hajj calendar to avoid disruptions in the 2025 hajj preparations, a position we still maintain as critical.”
  • #ENDBADGOVERNANCE: FG rearraigns 10 protesters, amends charges

#ENDBADGOVERNANCE: FG rearraigns 10 protesters, amends charges

The Nigerian government on Friday re-arraigned 10 young Nigerians arrested in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Gombe in connection with #EndBadGovernance.

The rearraignment follows the decision to amend the charge bordering on treasonable felony.

The re-arraignment was at the instance of an application by the Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Simon Lough to add Daniel Akande to the 1-8 count charge bordering on treasonable felony.

Recall that 10 protesters were on September 2, arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite when they pleaded not guilty to the six counts charge earlier brought against them.

They were also admitted to bail with stringent conditions with N10million each and one surety in like sum on September 11.

The amended charge has now included Daniel Akande who is a member of the Solidarity Network for Workers’ Rights as 11th defendant in the case.

Daniel was arrested in Abuja during a church service on September 1.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the eight counts charge when it was read to them.

The case which was initially slated for trial could not go on as scheduled as defendants were made to take their plea alongside Daniel Akande, the 11th defendant.

Earlier, counsel to the 1st and 2nd defendants, Abubakar Marshal said the amendment of the charge by the prosecution was not in line with section 216 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) .

He argued that the prosecution could not unilaterally amend the charge without the leave and permission of the court.

He also told the court that prosecution had not served the parties with the proof of evidence which the defendants would rely on.

He said in the cause of previous proceedings, they did apply and emphasise the need for the prosecution to furnish them with the proof of evidence to enable the defendants to prepare for their trial.

Marshal insisted that the prosecution must furnish them with the list of every witness they intend to rely on.

“The written testimonies of all witnesses including the police and all the documents must be provided.

Any procedure contrary to this invalidates the entire procedure,” Marshal argued.

Marshal also hinted on the application pending before the court seeking variation of bail for 3rd, 4th and 10th defendants respectively in line with section 396 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA ).

He said they had been able to perfect the bail conditions for seven out of 10 just as he prayed the court to vary the terms for the remaining three defendants in the interest of justice.

Meanwhile counsel to the 4th defendant, Anthony Itedjere while objecting to the amended charge said 11 people were listed as defendants but each of the 1-8 count has 14 persons named who are supposed to take plea to these count.

“As of this morning, the 12-14 persons name on count 1-8 has not been served and also not in the court. So this amended charge should be struck out.”

He also aligned himself to the argument made by Marshal that the prosecution must fulfill and comply with section 216 and seek the leave of the court adding that the amended charge could not stand on nothing.

The judge, after listening to the arguments of the parties involved in the case granted the prosecution the leave just as he urged the defence counsels to raise their objections if there are any defects at the appropriate time.

Counsel to the 11th defendant, Deji Adeyanju prayed the court to admit his client, 11th defendant, to bail on liberal terms.

The judge also agreed to the application and admitted Daniel Akande to N10million bail with one surety in like sum.

The court also held that the defendant must submit his International Passport to the court.

The surety must swear an affidavit of means and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He also granted the prayers of all the defence counsel and ordered that the defendants continue in the existing bail conditions.

He adjourned to October 4 for ruling on variation of bail application for 3rd, 4th and 10th defendants and trial to November 11 respectively.
